'Sordid Lives' is a celebration of diversity and the messy, imperfect beauty of family. Del Shores' brilliant writing, coupled with the cast's heartfelt performances, transforms the play into a powerful commentary on acceptance. This production not only entertains but serves as an introduction to the inclusive spirit of the Austin Rainbow Theatre.

Photo Flash: The City Theatre Austin Will Open its 2020 Season with ART
by Chloe Rabinowitz - Jan 22, 2020

How much would you pay for a white painting? This odd question sparks a firestorm in Yasmina Reza's Tony and Olivier Award winning comedic masterpiece about the lives of three old friends, the meaning of art and life, and the lengths we go – however, joyful, painful, or maddening – to protect those we care about.

City Theatre Austin Presents ART
by Stephi Wild - Jan 4, 2020

How much would you pay for a white painting? This odd question sparks a firestorm in Yasmina Reza's Tony and Olivier Award winning comedic masterpiece about the lives of three old friends, the meaning of art and life, and the lengths we go a?" however, joyful, painful, or maddening a?" to protect those we care about. Marc's friend, Serge has bought a white painting. Simple. But to Marc, the painting is a joke and he expresses that fully. Serge doesn't take this reaction well, and confronts Marc on many things, among those, his lack of standards to judge art. And so, the battle begins. Another friend, the hapless Yvan, gets pulled into the quarrel, whose tepid attempts at peacemaking only add fuel to the fire, and a hilarious-yet-poignant battle ensues that threatens to destroy their friendship. 'ART' is an intelligent play about a simple piece of art becoming an external representation of inner values; the perfect marriage between Moliere and Woody Allen, a nonstop crossfire of crackling language, biting humor, and the fragile, feeling hearts that make us who we are. Called a?oeone of the best contemporary comedies, period!a??

BWW Review: WHITE CHRISTMAS An Engaging Nostalgia Fest
by Frank Benge - Dec 6, 2018

Irving Berlin's WHITE CHRISTMAS is a 2000 musical based on Paramount Pictures 1954 film of the same name featuring the songs of Irving Berlin. The film itself was a remake of the film Holiday Inn. The new book is by David Ives and Paul Blake and features all of the songs from the 1954 film, along with some trunk songs, all by Irving Berlin and hews remarkably close to the plot line of the film, with a few exceptions. It premiered in St. Louis in 2000 at The Muny, after which it opened in San Francisco in 2004. This new stage musical played a limited engagement of 53 performances on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in 2008. It received two 2009 Tony nominations and seven Drama Desk Award nominations.

BWW Review: Georgetown Palace MARY POPPINS Delivers Disney Magic
by Frank Benge - Jul 22, 2018

P. L. Travers Mary Poppins magical nanny character was first published in 1934 and resulted in a series of eight children's books that ended in 1988. MARY POPPINS is a stage musical that uses the most iconic songs of the Sherman Brothers, with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, and a script by Julian Fellowes. The musical is a hybrid of Travers children's books and the 1964 Disney film, which fuses various elements from the two. I have some serious issues with the script, which I intend to discuss, but director Ron Watson and his talented cadre of technical artists produce pure 60's Disney magic.

BWW Review: WISH - A MUSICAL ADVENTURE is Wise, Witty and Wonderful
by Frank Benge - May 9, 2018

WISH is a world premiere new musical for young audiences that is set 100 years in the past and uses a highly theatrical and presentational storytelling style that successfully combines magic, music and youthful optimism with action and adventure. This unique and original story imagines the America of 100 years ago as a mythical place where the bold scientific discoveries and inventions of the era meet magic, superstition and wonder. It is even set in a town called Ideal. It is the story of young Samantha Major (Megan Hudson) and her friend Grace Strickland (Katya Welch) as they journey from the East to West coast to find and possibly save her father, inventor Tom Major (Scott Poppaw).

BWW Review: THE NORMAL HEART Highlights a community's struggle at The City Theatre
by Amy Bradley - Jul 13, 2017

The City Theatre Company presents Larry Kramer's THE NORMAL HEART, with compassion and care to the tragic subject matter. This mostly autobiographical tale from Kramer, shines a light on the HIV crisis that hit the gay community in New York City in the early eighties. With the horrifying illness gaining steam, and compounded by little to no cooperation from the community at large, the newly liberated 'gay movement' was stonewalled and devastated by the effects of the AIDS virus. To tell the story of his own experience during this plague, Larry Kramer puts his experiences to paper to share the heart-wrenching realities many homosexual communities faced during this time. At the helm of the activism is an outspoken, abrasive crusader Ned Weeks (a self-reflection of Larry Kramer). THE NORMAL HEART begins in a hospital waiting room with a few young men trading quips back and forth that all will be well. Within minutes, we discover all is not well, and the true villain of the show, the HIV virus, is about to take center stage in these happy young men's lives. Weeks is adamant about finding help for his crusade and passionately tells his fellow peers to 'button it up' for the time being. The timeline of the show follows the rising death toll of the AIDS virus from all over the world. As events escalate, Ned's personal relationships fall victim to his passionate and outlandish tactics in seeking support for their cause. The reflection and passion written by Kramer is nothing shy of breath-taking. With an emphasis on awareness and education, THE NORMAL HEART stays relevant and interesting for the present-day theatre-goer.

THE NORMAL HEART, Larry Kramer's Acclaimed Drama Opens 6/30
by A.A. Cristi - Jun 16, 2017

The City Theatre is excited to announce a special summer theatre event presentation of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart. Described as "riveting theatre," this moving, funny, raw, and thought-provoking examination of the fight during the AIDS epidemic, is one of the most successful plays in modern American theatre and deserving of production in every community that believes in the power in and equality of all its citizens. The production runs June 30 - July 16.
