The 28 quarterfinalists have been announced for the 27th annual American Traditions Vocal Competition (ATC), which is slated to run Feb. 17-21, 2020. The 28 talented vocalists, selected from over 100 applicants, will be competing for $40,000 in prizes, plus special performance opportunities with ATC's partner organizations, Savannah Philharmonic and Savannah VOICE Festival.

Today's subject Matt Torney is currently the Associate Artistic Director of Studio Theatre. Their excellent current production of Doubt: A Parable is helmed by Torney and plays through October 6th in Studio's Metheny space.

The Colorado based band, Trout Steak Revival has announced new tour dates for the Summer. During the auction lot for ROCKETMAN: an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John, Alexander Gilkes welcomed to the stage actor Taron Egerton, star of the upcoming motion picture film. Following a short preview of the trailer and a round of bidding on a trip to the London premiere of the film, the audience was taken by surprise when Gilkes asked Taron to sing one of Elton John's songs. Only agreeing to the performance if Elton played the piano, guests were brought to their feet as they watched Elton John take his position on the keys while Taron belted out the lyrics to one of his most beloved ballads, "Tiny Dancer."

On Thursday, December 13th, Frank 'Fraver' Verlizzo will discuss his 5 decades as Broadway's award-winning theatrical poster designer with Broadway World's Richard Ridge in the Bruno Walter auditorium at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Verlizzo, known as 'FRAVER,' is the author of the best-selling FRAVER BY DESIGN: Five Decades of Theatre Post Art from Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Beyond which was published in May by Schiffer Publishing. The book includes over 250 of his theatre poster designs from Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional and international productions. The Lincoln Center Library event begins at 6 pm and admission is free.

OneTrickDog* Records is pleased to announce release of Meshugenah, violinist Benjamin Sutin's second album of Klezmer-inspired contemporary music with Klazz-Ma-Tazz on June 15, 2018. Klazz' 2016 debut album, Tangibility, has been described as “one of the year's best.” Like the earlier album, Meshugenah is “part noir jazz, part Klezmer, part Balkan and Middle Eastern,” and “astonishingly original.” (Music Daily). The tracks include both originals and re-inventions of iconic Yiddish vaudeville tunes, and reflect Sutin's effort to “do with this repertoire what Charlie Parker and John Coltrane did with Broadway songs, establish a new Great American Song Book.” The tracks re-imagine the music of Sutin's childhood in a contemporary mode, borrowing from varied folk traditions as well as from contemporary jazz, rock and funk. Ultimately, however, they are linked by an exploration of what Sutin calls the search for nostalgia and novelty.
