Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, The Public's Free Shakespeare in the Park all-female production of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW began performances on May 24 and is part of the global 400th anniversary celebration of William Shakespeare's life and death. The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center celebrated the 16th annual MonteCristo Award ceremony with a presentation of the honor to award-winning stage and film director, playwright, and actor George C. Wolfe on Monday night at the Edison Ballroom. The O'Neill annually bestows its Monte Cristo Award on a prominent theater artist whose lifetime work has had an extraordinary impact on American theater. The gala event supports the Center's commitment to developing new work and new artists for the stage.

The ensemble includes Kristine Bendul, Paloma Garcia-Lee, Jenny Laroche, Jennifer Locke, Nathan Madden, Skye Mattox, Devin Roberts, Manny Stark, and Alex Wong.

More than 400 guests joined Olympians and stars of stage and screen to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students at the annual Point Honors gala the landmark New York Public Library last night. The evening celebrated the accomplishments of Point Foundation's (Point), higher education scholarship recipients. More than $500,000 was raised for Point, the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ students of merit.

Encores! Artistic Director Jack Viertel today announced casting for the Encores! production of Do I Hear a Waltz?, the romantic, rarely-seen 1965 musical that marked the only collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim. Do I Hear a Waltz? will star Claybourne Elder, Melissa Errico, Sarah Hunt, Zachary Infante, Cass Morgan, Richard Poe, Michael Rosen, Sarah Stiles, and Richard Troxell. The ensemble includes Kristine Bendul, Paloma Garcia-Lee, Jenny Laroche, Jennifer Locke, Nathan Madden, Skye Mattox, Devin Roberts, Manny Stark, and Alex Wong.

Tony Nominee Sarah Stiles & Gary Lucas to Perform Fleischer Brothers Tribute at Museum of the Moving Image

Renowned guitarist Gary Lucas (of Captain Beefheart fame) and Broadway star Sarah Stiles (Tony nominee for Hand to God) present a delightful and loving tribute to the swinging soundtracks of New York animation genius Max Fleischer and his surreal Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons of the 1930s. The live vocal-and-guitar performance, on Sunday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Museum of the Moving Image, will also feature screenings of six great Fleischer cartoons, almost all in 35mm prints from the UCLA Film & TV Archive: Ain't She Sweet, Koko's Earth Control, Swing You Sinners!, Snow White, Betty Boop for President, and Popeye the Sailor. The program will include a 45-minute set of live music, interspersed with screenings of six cartoons. (The total running time of the program is 85 minutes.)
