The Met's MARNIE to Be Screened at Rialto

The MET Live in HD presents for the first time the contemporary opera of Marnie, with music by composer Nico Muhly and libretto by Nicholas Wright. This co-production with the English National Opera is based on Winston Graham's novel, which inspired Alfred Hitchcock to direct the thriller of the same title.

Nico Muhly's MARNIE, aided and abetted by Nicholas Wright's libretto, dramaturg Paul Cremo and the sweeping production of Michael Mayer--which had its US premiere Friday night at the Met--is that fabled “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” Nothing is quite what it seems or results in easy answers--for the characters or the audience.

When the Met's literary advisor asked Nicholas Wright what he thought about doing the libretto for MARNIE, he said yes because he was really interested in working with composer Nico Muhly and Michael Mayer. He was somewhat reserved, however, about whether it was a good opera subject. That was understandable, of course, when he admitted, laughing, a case of mistaken identity.

Juilliard Celebrates 100 Years Of Pre-College

Juilliard Pre-College, under the direction of artistic director Yoheved Kaplinsky, celebrates its centennial season with a gala evening on Monday, November 5. Juilliard presents An Evening Celebrating 100 Years of the Juilliard Pre-College Division, featuring distinguished conductor Robert Spano, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, leading the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra in a concert with Juilliard faculty member and Pre-College piano alumnus Emanuel Ax, at 7pm in Alice Tully Hall. The program includes Bernstein's Overture to Candide; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 ("Emperor"); and Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34, with additional performances by Pre-College students and alumni.

The Metropolitan Opera presents the North American premiere of Marnie, an original Met commission by composer Nico Muhly and librettist Nicholas Wright, on October 19, 2018, with performances continuing until November 10. Based on Winston Graham's haunting novel, which also inspired the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, Marnie is conducted by Robert Spano in his Met debut and directed by Michael Mayer, who created the staging for the opera's world premiere at English National Opera in 2017. The November 10 matinee will be transmitted live to movie theaters throughout the world as part of the Met's Live in HD series.

Each summer, the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association (OGCMA) presents its annual Sacred Masterwork concert and this year is no exception. Rich in spiritual trills and sacred thrills, Music of the Spirit, the 2018 free concert features GWYNETH WALKER's Songs of Faith - which was commissioned by OGCMA and hasn't been performed here since its 2013 debut - and JOHN RUTTER's splendid Gloria. Jason C. Tramm will conduct The Great Auditorium Choir and guest soloists Monica Ziglar, Katherine Pracht, Ronald Naldi and Justin Beck, accompanied by the MidAtlantic Brass Ensemble and organist Gordon Turk. The Great Auditorium is located at 54 Pilgrim Pathway in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, and is handicapped-accessible.
