San Diego Symphony Announces 2018-2019 Season Featuring First Concerts Conducted by Rafael Payare as Music Director Designate, 14 Works New to San Diego Symphony Repertoire,

The 95th season of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) will conclude on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with "The Riddle of Shostakovich," the fourth program in this season's series, Inspirations and Tributes - each concert exploring how composers influence and pay tribute to each other. Assistant Conductor Joshua Gersen will lead the program, featuring selections from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist Justin Jay Hines (Philharmonic debut) will host the event, written and directed by Kevin Del Aguila.

Rafael Payare's highly anticipated inaugural concerts as San Diego Symphony's Music Director Designate take place as part of the annual January Festival. It will mark his only Jacobs Masterworks appearance this season and will feature acclaimed cellist Alisa Weilerstein and the orchestra's first-ever performance of Benjamin Britten's Symphony for Cello and Orchestra. He will also perform in a special Discovery Night concert on January 10, with all funds from this concert going to support the San Diego Symphony's Learning and Community Engagement programs.

National Chorale, New York's premier professional choral company, under the Artistic Direction of Everett McCorvey, continues its 2017-2018 Season at Lincoln Center with Beethoven Symphony #9 on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 8pm at the David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, 10 Lincoln Center Plaza, NYC. After a critically acclaimed East Coast Tour last month which included a Carnegie Hall debut on March 22, Apollo's Fire launches a new production of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (Orpheus in the Underworld) starting on April 13 in Cleveland. Conducted by founding artistic director Jeannette Sorrell and directed by British stage director Sophie Daneman, the semi-staged production will include a historically reconstructed version of the work's original ending, as well as period dancers, digital scenic projections, and a stellar cast of singers. Apollo's Fire will present Monteverdi's L'Orfeo on tour at three leading American performing arts institutions; return visits to University Musical Society in Ann Arbor on April 15 and Cal Performances in Berkeley on April 20, and a debut at Green Music Center in Sonoma on April 22.

The GRAMMY Award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus presents Silent Voices: If You Listen, the second installment of its multimedia, multi-composer, and multi-year Silent Voices series of concert works with spoken word, conceived, produced and performed by Brooklyn Youth Chorus (April 27-28, at National Sawdust). Silent Voices: If You Listen builds on the success of Silent Voices' 2017 premiere at BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House. Here, eight composers, all women, collaborate with the choristers in amplifying the voices of the marginalized and confronting the challenges of division and categorization, racism, sexism, social and economic disparity, immigration, our environment, and threats to our understanding of truth. Commissioned composers for Silent Voices: If You Listen include Julia Adolphe, Olga Bell, Anna Clyne, Paola Prestini, Toshi Reagon, Shelley Washington, Bora Yoon, and Pulitzer winner Du Yun; the concert will also feature a work with guest artist Shaina Taub. Unifying this work is the distinctively versatile and beautiful sound of the rigorously-trained singers - a chorus of culturally and socioeconomically diverse New York City young people, ages 12-18 - joined by International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). These are young voices set on resisting the socio-politically retrograde elements of the present in a move towards a more inclusive and compassionate vision of the future.

On Tuesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, acclaimed American tenor Lawrence Brownlee presents the New York premiere of Cycles of My Being, a new song cycle composed by Tyshawn Sorey with lyrics by Terrance Hayes that explores the realities of life as a black man in America. Brownlee—hailed as one of “the world's leading bel canto tenors” by the Associated Press—is conducted by composer Tyshawn Sorey and joined by violinist Randall Goosby, cellist Khari Joyner, clarinetist Alexander Laing, and pianist Kevin Miller for Cycles of My Being, which is co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall as part of the Hall's 125 Commissions Project. The program opens with Schumann's Dichterliebe, to be performed alongside pianist Myra Huang.

The New York Choral Society (NYCHORAL) will hold its annual Spring Gala at New York's Metropolitan Club (1 E 60th St, New York, NY 10022) on Thursday evening, April 5, 2018, starting at 6:00 pm. The organization will honor renowned opera singer and recitalist Stephanie Blythe with the NYCHORAL Music Excellence Award for her contributions to the musical profession, as well as Sylvia R. Hoisington who is celebrating her 50th season with the chorus. Produced in partnership with the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, the evening's showcase performance will feature soprano Amanda Majeski and tenor Ben Bliss, both of whom will be participating in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Cosi fan tutte from March 15 to April 9, 2018. Members of the NYCHORAL Chamber Ensemble will also perform. The evening will feature a silent auction of unique items and experiences. The program is as follows:

Broadway's MOTOWN: The Musical and Helen Hayes nominee N'Kenge will star in a riveting one-woman show LEGENDS: Diana Ross, Billie Holiday, Beyonce' and More with the Jacksonville Symphony at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts on March 23rd and 24th at 8:00pm with Maestro Nathan Aspinall.

Kahchun Wong returns to the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, where he is the Chief Conductor Designate, to conduct two concerts featuring Mahler's Symphony No. 5 on March 17 and 18, 2018. Wong will become the new Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra beginning in the 2018/2019 season.

American baritone Nathan Gunn and pianist Julie Gunn, partners in life and often on stage, will make their debut at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in an evening of cabaret by iconic composers ranging from Leonard Bernstein and Cole Porter to Billy Joel and Tom Waits.  The evening concert from an eclectic American Songbook joins Bernstein at 100, the worldwide celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history. An Evening with Nathan and Julie Gunn takes place Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 7:30pm in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis.

Apollo's Fire continues their busy 2017/2018 season with a 5-city tour of their celebrated A Night at Bach's Coffeehouse program, including the ensemble's debut at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 22. Conceived and conducted by the ensemble's founding artistic director, conductor/harpsichordist Jeannette Sorrell, A Night at Bach's Coffeehouse is inspired by the coffeehouse concerts led by J.S. Bach in Leipzig during the 18th century and features music by Bach and his contemporaries, including Telemann, Handel, and Vivaldi. The tour begins at Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury, VT on March 20 and concludes at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA on March 27.
