The Cleveland Orchestra Celebrates 100th Season with Carnegie Hall Concerts

Celebrating its 100th year during the 2017 2018 season, The Cleveland Orchestra returns to Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage for two concerts in January, led by Music Director Franz Welser-M st. Since its Carnegie Hall debut in 1922, The Cleveland Orchestra has performed at the Hall a total of 222 times in its 100-year history.

Charles Bruffy Recognized With Signature Sinfonia Award

GRAMMY-award winning conductor Charles Bruffy achieved a career and personal milestone this past Saturday when he received the Signature Sinfonian award from the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. Founded in 1898 at the New England Conservatory of Music, Phi Mu Alpha is an American collegiate fraternity for men with a special interest in music. The Signature Sinfonian award is conferred upon Sinfonian members who have achieved a high standard of accomplishment in their field or profession, thereby bringing honor to Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Other notable artists who have received the elite Signature Sinfonian award include Luciano Pavarotti, Branford Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Robert Shaw, as well as entrepreneurs George Eastman and Andrew Carnegie.

Tony Award nominee Den e Benton (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) joins the cast as Mary Turner, replacing Phillipa Soo, who regretfully can no longer participate due to scheduling conflicts.

Orchestra of St. Luke's continues its annual residency at Carnegie Hall this season with a wide variety of concerts in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage celebrating historic milestones, collaborating with notable guest soloists, presenting major masterworks of the classical orchestral repertoire, and premiering new works commissioned by Carnegie Hall. The Orchestra kicks off its residency on Thursday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. with OSL's first Conductor Laureate Pablo Heras-Casado, who concludes his six-year tenure as Principal Conductor. For this special event, the orchestra performs Mozart's "Great" Mass, featuring sopranos Camilla Tilling and Susanna Phillips, tenor Thomas Cooley, bass-baritone Michael Sumuel, and the Westminster Symphonic Choir, led by Joe Miller. The program also includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21.

The Cleveland Orchestra has announced that renowned choral director Robert Porco will step down from his position as the Orchestra's Director of Choruses with the conclusion of the 2017-18 season.  At that time, he will be the longest-serving Director of Choruses and Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus in the ensemble's history, he began his tenure with the 1998-99 season.
