Last night The York Theatre Company honored the musical theatre writing team of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt in a Fantastick gala concert and award ceremony directed by Richard Jay-Alexander. The 2017 Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre was presented to the legendary team (The Fantasticks, I Do, I Do!, 110 in the Shade, Celebration) at the event held at the Asia Society on Park Ave in NYC and BroadwayWorld was there. This week, The OD Company's (Chun soo Shin, CEO) new production of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Titanic opened to rave reviews at the Charlotte Theater in Seoul, South Korea. Directed by Eric Schaeffer, this new staging of the Maury Yeston and Peter Stone musical has completely sold out its limited engagement through February 11, 2018.

54 Below presented '54 BELOW SINGS KANDER AND EBB'S WOMAN OF THE YEAR' on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017. This performance featured an all star cast with nine ladies singing the songs of TESS (Lauren Bacall on Broadway), four men singing for SAM, and all the other roles covered by the rest of the cast. The performers were: Klea Blackhurst, Todd Buonopane, Mary Callahan, Robert Cuccioli, Joyce DeWitt, Natalie Douglas, John Epperson, Anita Gillette, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Dee Hoty, Christine Toy Johnson, Luba Mason, Julia Murney, Brad Oscar, Christine Pedi, Eve Plumb, Robbie Rozelle, and Kevin Zak. The musical director was Joshua Zecher-Ross, with Corey Schuyler on the bass, Chris Schultz on the drums and Dan Glaude on the reed.

Last night during an exclusive member event, Michael Gennaro, Goodspeed's Executive Director, announced three terrific titles on track for next season.

The temptation to take a film classic and turn it into a Broadway musical is a road fraught with peril. How do you take something perfect and make it better? This was the question posed in 1972 when producer David Merrick decided to musicalize the uproarious 1959 farce Some Like It Hot. The result was Sugar, which enjoyed a respectable 14-month run on Broadway (505 performances) and received four Tony nominations, including one for lead actor Robert Morse, who played Jerry/Daphne. The 86-year-old Morse was on hand at the Alex Theatre in Glendale Sunday night as Musical Theatre Guild presented a rousing staged reading of the musical. Morse and the audience clearly enjoyed the show (he could be seen doing a virtual karaoke act of the score from his seat), but most of what works for the show is what worked for the film, with little new of substance added to the musical.

Tony Roberts, celebrated actor of stage and screen, hosted Feinstein's/54 Below's one night only concert of Jule Styne, Bob Merrill, and Peter Stone's Tony nominated musical SUGAR, on Tuesday September 5th, joining Lesli Margherita, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Tony Sheldon, Neva Small, and Matt Hetherington. Musical Theatre Guild, the winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in the theatre, will open their 22nd Anniversary season with SUGAR, the stage musical version of the classic Hollywood film "Some Like It Hot."  This is the first of four musicals chosen in a season celebrating musical stage adaptions of films.  The one-night-only concert will take place at Glendale's historic Alex Theatre on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 7:00 PM.
