Lauren Gunderson's SILENT SKY Shines A Light On Female Astronomers

The play's director Claudia Billings says 'Gunderson in the most exciting playwright working today. She has made it her career focus to bring the stories of women who didn't get the recognition they deserved - to the forefront. The script has found huge success across the nation since it's release in 2011. We are beyond excited to bring it to the Las Cruces area. With NMSU's rich history and research in Astronomy, we feel like this is the perfect story to tell.'

BWW Review: SILENT SKY shines at Theatre Baton Rouge

For centuries, the significant contributions of science by women have been relatively unappreciated or unknown (unless you're Madame Curie), but thanks to recent a recent uptake of science-oriented bio dramas that is about to shift theatrically. Currently running at Theatre Baton Rouge is SILENT SKY, a vastly crucial yet little-known story of one woman whose groundwork laid the foundations of mapping the universe despite gender bias and other obstacles.

BWW Review: SILENT SKY at East Lynne Theater Company

SILENT SKY at East Lynne Theater Company is brilliant look at the big picture fueled by one woman's impassioned curiosity. It is the story of Henrietta Leavitt who helped determine the vastness and depth of the universe in an age when women at Harvard College Observatory, where she worked, were not even allowed to look through the telescope.

Gwen Wotawa to Lead Insight's SILENT SKY

In the late 19th century, Henrietta Leavitt served as one of the women computers at the Harvard Observatory. She became focused on recording information about the stars and the new understanding of their significance. SILENT SKY showcases her remarkable talent, determination and ingenuity. Her discovery impacted the scientific progress that led to the Hubble Telescope and significantly contributed to current understanding of the universe. As a woman, she was not offered the Nobel Prize, but scientists today recognize her incredible contribution.

East Lynne Theater Company Presents NJ Premiere Of SILENT SKY

Computers weren't always machines. In the late 1800's, computers were women astronomers who 'computed' data to map the sky. They were only allowed to work from photographic plates, since only men were allowed to look through the telescope at the Harvard College Observatory. Henrietta Leavitt (1868-1912) was one of these 'computers,' and the award-winning Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company is celebrating her 150th birthday by presenting the New Jersey premiere of 'Silent Sky.'

The play by Lauren Gunderson tells the true story of the astronomer Henrietta Leavitt who worked at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s. It is an astonishing piece of theatre.
