by A.A. Cristi - May 30, 2018

Main Street Theater presents the Regional Premiere of Daddy Long Legs based on the classic novel by Jean Webster and featuring music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominated composer/lyricist, Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre), and Tony-winning librettist/director, John Caird (Les Miserables).  "This show has the same romantic appeal that draws me to stories like Little Women and Anne of Green Gables as well as romantic period pieces like Downton Abbey and The Forsythe Saga," shares director Andrew Ruthven. "This love story is certainly a 'rags to riches' tale, but the heart of Daddy Long Legs is a young woman coming into her own.  The show is punctuated by Jean Webster's very strong feminist stance.  She pulls no punches in Jerusha's beliefs in votes for women, equality of the sexes, and the battle of sexes."

BWW Review: Theatre Raleigh's Sweet, Heartfelt DADDY LONG LEGS Transports Audience to a Simpler Time
by Lauren Van Hemert - May 18, 2018

If it is the secret of happiness you seek, you might look no further than The Kennedy Theatre in Downtown Raleigh where Theatre Raleigh's production of 'Daddy Long Legs' opened last night. Based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster, the two-actor musical 'Daddy Long Legs' is the coming-of-age story of Jerusha Abbott, the oldest orphan in The John Grier Home. Jerusha's life is forever changed when a mysterious unknown benefactor, who calls himself Mr. Smith, decides to send her to college. His nine-point plan 'for the further education of Jerusha Abbott' includes she write him one letter every month, which he will not read nor respond to. Over the next four years, Jerusha finds her spirit, voice, happiness, and love in the arms of Jervis Pendleton, who may have a secret of his own. 'Daddy Long Legs' is a sweet, heartfelt love story in the spirit of Miklos Laszlo's 1937 play 'Parfumerie,' which inspired the movies 'The Shop Around the Corner' and 'You've Got Mail.' And who knows, perhaps Theatre Raleigh's production may even inspire you to pen a love letter of your own.

BWW Review: Love Comes as a Surprise in DADDY LONG LEGS
by Ellen Dostal - Feb 28, 2018

It can be a wonderful adventure to watch two people falling in love, particularly when they themselves don't realize it's happening. When the adventure takes place on stage - as in John Caird and Paul Gordon's musical two-hander DADDY LONG LEGS - the audience has an advantage because they get to see the relationship develop from both points of view. The misunderstandings are more poignant, the coincidences even more delightful. By the time it becomes apparent to the couple in question, we've already fallen in love with them and are cheering them on to their eventual conclusion. Add music and the whole emotional journey becomes a romantic dream come true no fairy tale could tell better.
