Birdland has announced its upcoming May program!

Hylton Performing Arts Center announced today its 2019-2020 season of mainstage performances, featuring a diverse lineup of artists and ensembles across genres, as part of Hylton Presents, Hylton Family Series, Matinee Idylls, and the American Roots Series. The Hylton Center also announced the first Hylton Center EXTRA! for the season: the husband and wife duo and banjo icons, B la Fleck and Abigail Washburn, in a special concert event featuring their unique blend of alternative bluegrass. Season subscriptions are on sale to Friends of the Hylton Center at HyltonCenter.org/preview or by phone at 703-993-7700. Lauded jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, accompanied by THE MEMPHIS SOULPHONY, will be bringing her latest show MEMPHIS: YES, I'M READY, based on her latest musical release Memphis: Yes, I'm Ready to The Wallis for one night only March 23, 2019. The most warm and delightful Ms. Bridgewater managed to entertain and enlightened me on the phone for an informative, heartfelt forty-five minutes.

Black Ensemble Theater continues its 2019 Season (Legends and Lessons) with Style and Grace: In Tribute to Lena Horne, written and directed by Kylah Williams. Style and Grace: In Tribute to Lena and Nancy will be performed May 11 - June 30, 2019 at the Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center, 4450 N. Clark Street in Chicago. The press opening is Sunday, May 19 at 3:00pm. 

The season at SOPAC continues with Nimbus performing at South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) March 29 at 8 p.m. The program features the premiere of Samuel Pott's Hollow Square with Timothy Eriksen playing live. The Grammy Award-nominated Eriksen brings a distinctive sound grounded in the roots tradition of sacred harp singing and early Appalachian folk - earthy, incessant, and guttural.

Hoff-Barthelson Music School's Annual Benefit Concert, the School's largest fundraising event of the year taking place on Sunday March 31, 2019, will feature 2019 Grammy award winner John Patitucci and his Jazz Trio. The concert will include special appearances by advanced HBMS jazz and chamber music students. The event will be held in the main sanctuary of the Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale.

After the powerful sincerity of his sold-out Ella, Louis & All That Jazz show in 2017, world-renowned trumpeter Byron Stripling returns to the The Philly POPS in Uptown Nights, March 1-3 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

Audiences will have another chance to celebrate the life of the trailblazing entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte with artists who knew him well, as the uplifting  and dynamic concert "Turn the World Around: The Music and Legacy of Harry Belafonte" returns to Aaron Davis Hall on Friday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m.  Presented by City College of the Arts (CCCA), the musical tribute on the icon's 92nd birthday will feature songs from the Belafonte songbook performed by members of the Belafonte Alumni Group, a collection of artists who have performed with the star for decades. Vocalists Ty Stephens and Branice McKenzie as well as keyboardist and longtime Belafonte musical director Richard Cummings Jr. will be among the performers.
