A staple of the British stage, Noël Coward’s Hay Fever was inspired by the playwright’s travels in New York meeting an eccentric family. Supposedly, the matriarch wasn’t kind to Coward’s perceptions of their lifestyle, but this comedy of manners still paid off and has become one of his best known works. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Coward’s passing, the charming Mill at Sonning is staging a new revival.

Aptly kicking off its UK Tour in James’ hometown – and that of his protagonist detective Roy Grace – this stage adaptation by Shaun McKenna is capably performed and authentically menacing in its simplicity, but a problem with pacing prevents it from fulfilling its full potential.

Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black will embark on a UK Tour, opening at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre on Wednesday 6 September 2023, following the production’s final performance in the West End at The Fortune Theatre tomorrow, Saturday 4 March.

Susan Hill's The Woman in Black celebrated 13,000 performances at The Fortune Theatre on 13 August 2022. To celebrate this milestone performance, a strictly limited number of £13 tickets are available for select performances until 27 August.

Now I’ll come right out and say it: I really wanted to like this play. After a lovely meal and inspired by the genuine passion that clearly unpins everything at this theatre, I was excited to get engrossed in Simon’s comedy – but the story didn’t grab me.
