The Jazz Singer, reinterpreted by director and performer Joshua William Gelb and composer and performer Nehemiah Luckett. Set on the Lower East Side, the 1927 film tells the story of a a?oejazz croonera?? forced to choose between his immigrant Jewish heritage and his aspirations of becoming a Broadway star. Though the film is historically significant for its integration of synchronized sound, it is most remembered for its controversial use of blackface. Visionary puppet artist Heather Henson announced today IBEX Puppetry's upcoming four-city national tour of Ajijaak on Turtle Island. Co-directed by Grammy Award winner Ty Defoe and Henson, the daughter of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, the tour launches by opening the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival with performances January 17 through January 20, and follows with performances in Baraboo, WI at the Al. Ringling Theatre (January 24-25); FirstWorks Frontier Series in Providence, RI (January 31-February 1); and New York, NY at The New Victory Theater (March 1-10). Writer/performer Kirya Yvonne Traber presents a theatrical mixtape at JACK, sharing songs of necessity and stories of longing. For this mix of concert and theater piece, Traber is backed by a four-piece band, with musical arrangements by Emma Alabaster. Featured musicians include Kala Brame (percussion), Alex Marcelo (piano), Emma Alabaster (bass), and Gwen Laster (viola), with a scenic installation by Jacqui Martinez and lighting design by Marika Kent. What We Needed features original music and text by Traber, and was created, in part, through the Lincoln Center Education Community Artist in Residence Program.
