Review: DRIFTWOOD, Kiln Theatre

“It’s like vultures circling a carcass,” one character in Driftwood says of the uneasy situation in Trinidad a few years shy of independence. This is the febrile setting for Casualty actress Martina Laird’s debut play, a portrait of a nation told entirely within the walls of one Port of Spain gentleman’s club, named ALMA.

Review: WE HAD A WORLD, Hampstead Theatre

On her deathbed, US playwright Joshua Harmon’s grandmother granted him permission to write a play about their family, on the condition that it be as “brutal and vitriolic” as possible. The result is We Had A World, a Pandora’s Box of generational trauma – indeed, the actor playing Harmon begins by opening up a literal box.

Review: GRACE PERVADES, Starring Ralph Fiennes & Miranda Raison

Following a sell-out run at Theatre Royal Bath, David Hare's play, Grace Pervades, is a love letter to theatre, following the professional and personal partnership of legendary Victorian theatrical duo Sir Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. Together they performed over 27 years, changing the face and status of theatre.

Review: THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI, starring Mark Gatiss

A corrupt lot steeped in scandal puppeteers the economy. Unreasonable taxes are plaguing the people. Violence is rampant. All the while, a megalomaniac is gaining more traction by the day. Did we turn on the news, or are we watching Bertolt Brecht’s merciless satire? Seán Linnen transforms the allegorical German classic into a riotous, electric, exciting romp with music by Placebo. Translated by Stephen Sharkey, it follows a fictional mobster who, appealing to the masses, reaches enormous power in 1930s Chicago. Brecht wrote the play as a response to Hitler’s ascent to dictatorship, specifically including direct references and relevant information about the timeline. Now more than ever, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is both a parable and a warning.

Review: THE AUTHENTICATOR, National Theatre

Eccentric artist Fenella Harford (Sylvestra Le Touzel) inherits her family’s stately home and uncovers a cache of hidden diaries that may rewrite its history. She recruits ambitious academic Marva (Rakie Ayola) to authenticate them, who in turn brings in her overlooked mentor Abi (Cherrelle Skeete), a meticulous expert with sharper instincts than she lets on. As the three women probe deeper into the documents, the house begins to yield uncomfortable truths about its colonial past. Personal histories begin to intertwine with national ones, tensions rise between the trio, and what starts as scholarly inquiry spirals into a confrontation with buried trauma, ownership, and the ghosts of Britain’s slave-trading legacy.
