BWW Review: SHE LOVES ME at Signature Theatre
by David Friscic
- Mar 10, 2022
A creamy confection drenched with a masterful book by Joe Masteroff, the classic rom com of musicals She Loves Me moves with amorous and sparkling abandon at the acclaimed Signature Theatre. A large ensemble cast delivers the goods in this superb intermingling of old-world charm and contemporary relevance. The race for romance is on and this production feels like a breezy interlude from the cares of the world thanks to the meticulous synchronization of every element of this classic musical. Under the Direction of Matthew Gardiner, professional polish and pizazz permeates every facet of this production.

BWW Review: SECRET THINGS at 1st Stage
by Pamela Roberts
- Nov 24, 2021
SECRET THINGS by Elaine Romero examines faith and human connection – today and through generations. A very sure and charismatic cast and an intriguing history of the hidden Jewish roots in communities of the U.S. Southwest can’t quite make up for a problematic script.

by Andrew White
- May 20, 2021
How He Lied to Her Husband is a charming, 40-minute diversion which will enliven any home, and should be at the top of your to-watch list for this weekend. Available only until Sunday night (per hyper-strict Equity guidelines), it features three of DC’s great talents and offers us a tantalizing glimpse of what kind of fare the Washington Stage Guild will serve up, live and onstage, come the Fall.
BWW Interview: Bringing HOW HE LIED TO HER HUSBAND to the Digital Stage
by Nicole Rosky
- May 14, 2021
Streaming for free May 19-23, How He Lied to Her by George Bernard Shaw is presented by the Washington Stage Guild. Set in a London drawing room, the play is a witty look at the love triangle as only Shaw could envision it. The play has often been interpreted as a kind of satirical commentary on Shaw's own highly successful earlier play Candida, which one of the characters gets tickets to see.

Signature Theatre and Stephen Sondheim have been a winning combination in the DC theatre scene since 1991when the company presented Sweeney Todd at Gunston. In 1992 it presented the Stephen Sondheim/John Weidman collaboration known as Assassins. The show was produced again by Signature in 2006 in their garage space.
BWW Review: ASSASSINS at Signature Theatre - You Will Get Goose Bumps!
by Charles Shubow
- Aug 23, 2019
It is not often one opens a theater program and on page one sees a letter from composer Stephen Sondheim. I had the privilege of attending the joint Jason Robert Brown and Stephen Sondheim concert on June 24, 2019 at Town Hall in New York City to raise funds for 'Brady United Against Gun Violence' (see link below). It was a very moving evening of great theatrical music by two of this country's best composers.

BWW Review: BLACKBEARD at Signature Theatre
by Elliot Lanes
- Jul 1, 2019
Signature Theatre concludes its 29th season with a World Premiere musical written by, in my opinion, one of the most underrated writing teams working in musical theatre today. Blackbeard written by John Dempsey (Book & Lyrics) and Dana P. Rowe (Music) has everything you could ever want in a musical. It features a high quality score, a great cast, excellent production values, and swordplay. What more do 1you need?
