Winners have been announced for the 2020 BroadwayWorld Des Moines Awards - which were back bigger than ever, celebrating the best in local theatre of the past decade! 

The Des Moines Playhouse safely presented four shows in its Live Theatre Drive-In this summer. Staged in the theatre's parking lot with audiences watching from their cars or lawn chairs and listening via FM radio, the shows were a hit with audiences. Starting Friday, Sept. 11, 2020 a?" what was scheduled to be opening night of The Playhouse's 102nd season a?" The Playhouse will stream two of the drive-in shows, Rounding Third and The Roommate online via Broadway On Demand.

The Des Moines Playhouse has added a performance of Live Theatre Drive-In: The Roommate, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 7:00 PM. Shows are free a?" donations are accepted a?" but reservations are requested due to limited availability. Looking for the light in the dark times we face can be very difficult. In 1942, a girl went into hiding with her family, along with another family, from the Nazi's who had invaded Holland. While in hiding the girl kept a diary of her experience, which after her death would become the most read books in the world. 78 years after starting her diary, her story can be seen on stage in Des Moines Playhouse's beautiful production of a?oeThe Diary of Anne Franka?? which opened this last weekend. Their production comes at just the right time as the day this review comes out, we will be pausing for International Holocaust Memorial Day.

Revisiting the past can be difficult. Sometimes it's addressing an issue that has come up, while at other times it can be about coming to terms with events or actions from our past. In a?oeA Doll's House: Part 2a??, one of theatres most well know heroine's is doing just that. While a?oeA Doll's Housea?? is known for the door slamming at the end of the show, a?oeA Doll's House: Part 2a??, being presented in rep at Iowa Stage, opens the door for us to revisit these characters, and look at women's roles in the family today.
