The Wilbury Theatre Group is closing out their 2018-2019 main series season with FUN HOME, the musical based on the highly acclaimed 2006 graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. Fun Home, directed here by Josh Short, deals with both Bechdel's coming of age, as well as her coming out, but is as much her entire family's story than just hers alone.

The winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical, FUN HOME is based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir. This groundbreaking production introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family that connect with her in surprising new ways.

This subversive, loopy, and fantastically eccentric take-think banjos, beach balls, and guitars-on Gilbert and Sullivan's preposterous musical took audiences in Chicago by storm when presented by rebel theatre-makers The Hipocrites. Frederic was mistakenly apprenticed as a young boy to a band of sentimental pirates. Now 21, he falls head-over-heels for the Major-General's daughter and forswears the buccaneer's life forever, or so he thinks. This buoyant, award-winning Pirates of Penzance by Sean Graney and Kevin O'Donnell and featuring just 12 actors (who also serve as the orchestra) is an irrevent and fresh homage to a world turned upside-down for Gilbert and Sullivan diehard fans and newcomers alike.

Ilyse Robbins leads a team of champions in Greater Boston Stage Company's SHE LOVES ME, a delightful musical for the holiday season - or any season, for that matter. Music Director Matthew Stern brings out the best in the Jerry Bock/Sheldon Harnick score with the voices of Jennifer Ellis, Sam Simahk, Aimee Doherty, and Jared Troilo at the front and center of a talented ensemble.

MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY takes place in the near future, and then further into the future, and then way into the future as the world as we knew it becomes increasingly distorted and warped seemingly via a century long game of telephone.  It's a play that analyzing will just leave a person more discombobulated, so it's probably best to just strap in any enjoy the ride.  Regardless of whether or not you understand it, you will come away thoroughly entertained by the phenomenal cast and skillful music direction of Wilbury favorite David Tessier.  The people Wilbury Theatre Group are masters of the strange and unexpected, and even if the audience can't completely grasp what's going on, the cast has everything handled, so that it's best to just sit in their thrall and trust that we're all going to make it out ok.

There are certainly no perfect formulas for creating the perfect musical. Lately, it seems that many new shows are following one of two "tried and true" formulas for success, both of which can actually lead to pretty epic failure. One is trying to turn something like a movie, television show, cartoon or comic book into a musical. The second is trying to create a musical that has something for everyone, a show that tries to please every audience member with a little bit of everything. The Addams Family, which kicks off the new season at Ocean State Theatre Company, is an example of how both of those formulas sometimes fall very, very flat.

While it seems that some musicals are constantly produced and have been seen by every theatergoer alive, others seem more elusive. For example, there's no good explanation for why so many people have mentioned recently that they've never seen the musical Gypsy. 'Oh, I know the songs,' they all say. Immediately followed by, 'But I've never seen the actual show.' If you are among that number, Ocean State Theatre Company has just what you need, a nearly perfect production of this classic and beloved musical. And if you are not one of those people, and you have seen the show before, you should definitely take this opportunity to see it again.
