Legendary costume designers Toni-Leslie James and Ann Roth each will be honored with a Ming Cho Lee Award for Lifetime Achievement in Design, bestowed by the Henry Hewes Design Awards at the 57th annual event on November 1 in a livestream awards ceremony.

In a week filled with another flurry of announcements, the CDC’s announcement loosening mask wearing guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals solidified the reopening timeline for many theatres. While this is causing adjustments to seating plans (towards higher capacity), planning for bringing back company members, and more - the news was more than welcome by most in the entertainment industry.

At its 29th General Assembly on May 15, the International Association of Theatre Critics named Jeffrey Eric JENKINS as President. Dr. Jenkins is the first United States representative elected to head the 65-year-old organization, which represents nearly 3,000 theatre critics in more than 80 countries.

The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee honored the four 2018 honorees of the 54th annual Henry Hewes Design Awards at a luncheon in New York yesterday which was attended by some of the top theater designers in the country.  The 2017-18 honorees were David Zinn, Emily Rebholz, Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew and Palmer Hefferan.

In the last few decades, theater has become much bigger business than it used to be. However, in that same period of time, the coverage of it in mainstream media outlets has dwindled. Many of us may not remember a time that off-Broadway openings were covered on Entertainment Tonight, but it happened. In recent years, even in America's theater epicenter, theater is losing ground in major publications. Neither The New York Post or The New York Daily News has a critic on staff any longer. It is hard to even tally the amount of veteran theater writers from around the country that have lost their jobs in the last decade.

Five theater artists will be honored by the Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee during the presentation of its 2014 Awards in a luncheon ceremony scheduled for October 6. Bob Crowley (The Glass Menagerie), Linda Cho (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), Justin Townsend (Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play) and G. Lucas Crane and Keith Skretch (This Was the End) will be honored with 2014 Henry Hewes Design Awards. Three of the five are receiving his or her first Henry Hewes Design Award. Bob Crowley was previously honored in 2007 for his work with Scott Pask on The Coast of Utopia. For the 2014 honors, 91 theater artists were nominated for outstanding artistry in 59 productions presented during the 2013-2014 New York theater season. It has been highlighted by GTG's co-production of Shaw's You Never Can Tell with and at The Pearl Theatre Company. This production, which was filmed for the New York Library for the Performing Arts and Lincoln Center archives, is ending its limited run on Sunday October 13th.
