Harper Lee’s classic book To Kill A Mockingbird has a legion of fans and so does the 1962 film but it would be best to forget the source material and simply savor the theatricality of the play To Kill A Mockingbird now playing at the Kennedy Center.  Playwright Aaron Sorkin has written a stage adaptation that succeeds beautifully on its own terms.

Chicago's Congo Square Theatre Company, one of the nation's premier African American theatres, celebrates the Juneteenth holiday with two festive “Homecoming”-themed programs, Sunday, June 19 at the Zhou B Art Center, 1029 W. 35th Street in the Bridgeport neighborhood.

It's not an overstatement to say that Jacqueline Williams is a staple of the Chicago theater community. She returns to her hometown in the role of Calpurnia in the current national tour of Aaron Sorkin's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, coming to Broadway In Chicago from May 17,209, 2022. Williams reflected on her return to live theater, what makes this stage adaptation so impactful and timely, and some of her favorite Chicago theater memories.

The mockingbird is noted for its ability to duplicate the sounds they hear. The bird's reference in the title of Harper Lee's epic novel, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD supposedly refers to the statements of prejudice that are repeated over and over in the book's famous trial. Statements about Blacks, Jews, the more and less educated, the economic class of a person. The only way to stop the sounds is to destroy the source.

Congo Square Theatre Company has rescheduled two of its signature programs, the Festival on the Square and Vision Benefit, to now take place on Sunday, June 19, 2022, commemorating the Juneteenth holiday. Both events were originally scheduled for February 5, 2022.

OHIO STATE MURDERS centers on Suzanne (a harrowing Jacqueline Williams), an accomplished writer who returns to Ohio State University’s campus for the first time since her freshman year in 1949. Steppenwolf has announced a new offering joining the virtual lineup—the world premiere audio adaptation of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, based on the book by Erika L. Sánchez and adapted for audio from the stage play by acclaimed playwright Isaac Gómez and co-directed by ensemble members Sandra Marquez and Audrey Francis.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company will present Wally World, the second of six productions debuting on its Steppenwolf NOW virtual stage. Written by Isaac Gómez and co-directed by Gómez and Lili-Anne Brown (Animal Farm), the play will be presented as a two-act radio production, which begins streaming December 16, 2020.
