Preview: CINDERELLA'S CASTLE at the El Portal Theater

A dark, musical retelling of the classic damsel-in-distress fairy tale, Cinderella's Castle—which was funded by Kickstarter after a massive buzz online—features an original 80s-esque 'synth-pop' soundtrack, elaborate puppetry, and a cast of 10.

Review: BIG TROUBLE AT LITTLE YALTA at Central Standard Theatre

It is not often an audience gets the chance to participate in the developmental process of making significant art that also qualifies as fun. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE YALTA by Neal Salvage may be that rare opportunity when parody, satire, and history can come together.

Interview: 'No Spiel...The Show Must Go On!' - MSMT Panel Explores FUNNY GIRL

“We battle with other theatres to get the rights for shows.  We always try to get MSMT on the national radar as much as we can and get first rights if possible, but it is very competitive,” explains Curt Dale Clark, Maine State Music Theatre’s Artistic Director, as he recounts how the Brunswick theatre managed a virtual coup for this 2024 season by becoming the first regional theatre to receive the rights to produce FUNNY GIRL after it closed its recent revival on Broadway.  “In the case of FUNNY GIRL, Concord Theatricals was holding our money for a show that we planned to produce in 2020 before the pandemic shut everyone down. Since they do not return money, they were eager for us to choose another show from their catalog and clear their books.  I agreed if they would give us the first rights to FUNNY GIRL after the Broadway show closed.” Clark is sharing his thoughts with the audience at MSMT’s second Peek Behind the Curtain on July 3 at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, where he is joined by actors Sue Cella, Douglas Raymond Williams, and Michelle Beth Herman, as well as panel moderator, Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold.

Augie Haas to Release Live Jazz Album in August

Set for release on August 16, 2024, the record realizes Haas’s desire to create an album where listeners close their eyes and feel transported to a basement speakeasy in NYC, hearing great jazz and having an amazing time basking in the environment of what jazz is all about – the players, the listeners, and the moment.

Review: HOUSE OF LIFE, Soho Theatre

House of Life is a work of theatre created by Sheep Soup that is, according to its description, “one-part sermon, one-part purge, three-parts party,” or, in simpler terms, a “travelling musical cult.” You are greeted by a bright and glittery backdrop, as well as a table full of instruments and mixing equipment, the perfect setting for a rave.

Review: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN at Playhouse On The Square

Frank Abagnale, Jr. is a REAL character. And by real, I mean totally fake. According to his 1980 memoir and the 2002 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio (directed by Steven Spielberg), this man claims to have worked as an assistant state attorney general, a Pan Am commercial airline pilot and a hospital physician-all without any formal training.

Sony Classical to Release 'Louis Lane Conducts the Cleveland Orchestra – The Complete Epic and Columbia Album Collection'

Between 1959 and 1972 – with the full Cleveland Orchestra, the somewhat smaller Cleveland Pops and the chamber-sized Cleveland Sinfonietta – Louis Lane made a series of critically acclaimed recordings for Columbia. They display the “exceptional breadth and impeccable taste” for which this gifted but perennially undervalued conductor was lauded in a tribute by the orchestra’s executive director.

Review: SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE at Santa Fe Playhouse

Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George opened at Santa Fe Playhouse on Saturday and all I can say is wow. The 1984 musical features music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by James Lapin.  Inspired by the French pointillist  painter Georges Seurat’s painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the plot revolves around George (deftly played by Playhouse regular David Stallings), who immerses himself deeply in painting his masterpiece, and his great-grandson (also named George, also played by Stallings), a conflicted and cynical contemporary artist.

Only Twin (Cardiknox, Forgive Durden) Releases New Single From Upcoming Album

Only Twin, the solo project of Seattle-bred, Los Angeles-based Thomas Dutton (formerly of the indie-emo band Forgive Durden on Fueled by Ramen and synth-pop group Caridknox on Warner) will release his sophomore album It Feels Nice to Burn on July 19th. Dutton has also shared the album’s newest single “Love of a Lifetime,” a breathtaking synth-driven love song written for his wife. Listen to it now!
