Academy Award-winning actress Estelle Parsons is returning to Theater for the New City as the honoree at its annual Love and Courage gala to raise money to present the work of emerging playwrights.

Theater for the New City will present a new show in conjunction with Ottawa playwrights Becky McKercher and Sarah Thuswaldner: 'Shelley and Lovelace Never Met,' the conversation that never happened.

Tisch New Theatre's production of Alice by Heart will take place at Theater for the New City from April 26th - April 28th, 2024. Directed by Juliette Markman, Choreographed by Erin Amstein, Music Direction by Chelsea Melnick, and Produced by Leah Frantz, this adaptation of Alice by Heart asks the question: can we ever truly escape our reality?

From April 4 to 21, Theater for the New City will present the world premiere of 'Issue #9,' an original musical written and directed by Briana Bartenieff, composed by J.H. Greenwell. 

Smoking Mirror Theatre Company, dedicated to producing Shakespeare's plays in the New York City area, announced that it will present the pre-Off-Broadway engagement of Shakespeare's Prisons: Tales of Conscience and Illusion, June 15 - 18, as a (TLab Shares Hosts) guest production at Theaterlab.

The Segal Theatre will host a book talk with theatre scholar and director Avra Sidiropoulou discussing her latest publication Staging 21st Century Tragedies. Τheatre, Politics, and Global Crisis (Routledge 2022).

Theater Three Collaborative in New York and Persona Theater Company in Athens, two companies known for their social justice work, will present the world premiere of Karen Malpede’s Troy Too.

George Bartenieff – actor, director, and co-founder of Theater for the New City – will be remembered at one of theatres he called home, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. Bartenieff’s life and work will be celebrated at Coffeehouse Chronicles #166 on October 1, 2022 at 3pm, at the Ellen Stewart Theatre.

On Monday, September 19, Theater For The New City, 155 First Ave. (at E. 10th Street), will present a memorial for its co-founder George Bartenieff (January 23, 1933-July 30, 2022) to celebrate his creative years at the theater, 1971-1992.  Reception begins at 7:30 PM and a narrated pictorial, remembrances and performances will start at 8:00 PM.

La MaMa ETC’s 61st season will feature world-premieres by John Kelly, Erik Ehn, Elizabeth Swados, Witness Relocation/Dan Safer, Bobbie Jene Smith and Ping Chong, along with the live, in-person stage debut of Split Britches’s 2021 digital production LAST GASP and the first-ever revival of Maria Irene Fornes’ EVELYN BROWN.

“Blue Valiant,” stars two of America’s most respected, multiple-award-winning actors, Kathleen Chalfant, and George Bartenieff and introduces Millie Ortiz. Written and directed by Karen Malpede and filmed on location at Farm Arts Collective, with a score by Arthur Rosen and horse projections by photographer Ellen Lynch.

In partnership with The Research Center for Arts and Culture, The Actors Fund held a launch event for the Performing Arts Legacy Project (PAL) website yesterday at Actors' Equity in New York City.

HB Studio, one of New York's original acting studios, has announced UTA HAGEN at 100, a series of special events and workshops celebrating the centenary of its master teacher, the legendary actress and activist Uta Hagen. UTA HAGEN at 100, honoring the three-time Tony Award winning actress and her legacy as a pioneering theater artist, activist and master teacher of HB Studio, will kick off on Monday, February 25 with a series of centennial events. The celebration will culminate on Monday, June 10 with a centennial gala honoring the actress, whose 100th birthday is Wednesday, June 12.
