The NY Dance and Performance Awards, The Bessies, New York City's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, celebrates a landmark 35th anniversary this year. Today, the nominees for the 2019 Bessie Awards, along with the recipients of the 2019 Juried Bessie Award and 2019 Outstanding Breakout Choreographer Award, were announced and celebrated at the Bessies press conference. BroadwayWorld first reported last month that SLAVE PLAY will come to Broadway this fall. Producers Greg Nobile and Jana Shea of Seaview Productions, Troy Carter, Level Forward, and Nine Stories, founded by Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker, have officially announced that the acclaimed new play by Jeremy O. Harris, directed by Robert O'Hara, will be coming to Broadway's Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street) this fall. The strictly limited 17-week engagement will begin preview performances Tuesday, September 10, ahead of an official opening night of Sunday, October 6.

Then the government, represented by its functionary Lucius (Michael Rogers), brings in Shimeus (Wade McCollum), a derelict of another sort, whimpering and traumatized by an arson that killed everyone else in his family. Lucius orders the Browns to harbor Shimeus as a guest. Almost immediately, however, Shimeus stops whimpering, and, more importantly, stops behaving like a guest, and more like an invader - well maybe not a declared invader but a lot like a space alien whose intentions toward neighbors aren't entirely clear but don't seem encouraging, a la the plant in Little Shop of Horrors.

The Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival (FLMTF) opens its second production this season, the song and dance spectacular, Grand Hotel. The show runs July 10 through July 31 at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Emerson Park.

Cortland Repertory Theatre takes audiences on a trip to the Greek Islands, and back to 1970's music, with their next high-energy summer production, the hit musical "Mamma Mia"! Featuring the extremely popular music by the iconic pop group ABBA, the music and lyrics for this show are written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, with some songs with Stig Anderson, and the book is written by Catherine Johnson. 

Tony award winner Cady Huffman returns to The Green Room 42 with her critically acclaimed sold out one woman show Miss. Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music for two more shows on Weds. July 24th and Weds. July 31st. Broadway World's own Richard Ridge caught up with Cady and her long time collaborator, writer director Will Nunziata during a break in rehearsal to chat about bringing the life and career of the legendary Peggy Lee to the stage.

Izen and Koepfinger's 'Eve of Beltane' tells the oh so familiar tale of forbidden love and examines the very fabric of its nature. Beyond time, beyond space, we find that divine love can penetrate all boundaries - race, nation, and class. This timeless drama features the music and lyrics of Joe Izen with Henry Aronson as Musical Director. Cailin Heffernan will direct. Production Stage Management is by Byron C. Saunders.

In their first musical together, Kayla Rivera ('In the Heights,' 'Side Show') and Nick Varricchio ('A Chorus Line,' 'Saturday Night Fever') play songwriting duo Carole King and Gerry Goffin in the Philippine premiere of the Broadway hit 'Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.' The critically-acclaimed local production, which is the second 20th-anniversary offering of Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group, in partnership with ABS-CBN, closes its limited 4-weekend run at the Meralco Theatre in Pasig City today, with performances at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets are still available at TicketWorld.com.ph or at the venue.
