San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock today announced the Company's 98th season, which opens on September 11, 2020 with an Opening Night Celebration featuring soprano Albina Shagimuratova and tenor Pene Pati in concert with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra conducted by Music Director Designate Eun Sun Kim. Opening Night festivities include San Francisco Opera Guild's Opera Ball, BRAVO! CLUB's annual Opening Night Gala and two new events: the Opera Supper in the Veterans Building's elegant Green Room and, for the entire audience, a celebratory, post-concert toast to the season.

I admit this is an absolutely personal, totally one-sided view of what gave one man opera thrills last year and what I will look back on with delight. Some are old works, some are new, some are individual performers, some are ensembles, some are complete productions, some are merely the highlight of an evening, most are domestic, a few are foreign. In any case, as the new decade begins, I recall that these are the vocal highlights that made my heart beat a little faster and made me look forward to the year ahead.

The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess returns to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since 1990, in a new production directed by James Robinson in his company debut. Starring Eric Owens and Angel Blue and conducted by David Robertson. Porgy and Bess comes to the big screen at The Ridgefield Playhouse in a LIVE simulcast on Saturday, February 1st at 12:55pm, part of the Classical Series, underwritten by Jeanne Cook, Liz & Steven Goldstone, and Sabina & Walter Slavin with support from Whistle Stop Bakery.

MasterVoices, led by Artistic Director Ted Sperling, continues its 2019-20 season on January 10 and 11 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College of Criminal Justice with the New York premiere of Iron & Coal, Jeremy Schonfeld's multimedia rock-opera about his family's experience in the Holocaust and its aftermath. Along with MasterVoices, joining Schonfeld onstage will be distinguished theater artist Rinde Eckert, tenor Daniel Rowan, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and the New York-based contemporary music ensemble, Contemporaneous.

In December, 92Y's Tisch Center for the Arts closes out the first half of their 2019/2020 season with two exciting premieres. The McGill/McHale Trio will give the world premiere of a 92Y-commissioned work by MacArthur Fellow Tyshawn Sorey (December 19) and virtuoso pianist Daniil Trifonov returns to 92Y with the New York Philharmonic String Quartet for the New York premiere of his piano quintet (December 1). Violinist Carolin Widmann makes her New York concerto debut, starring in Weill's Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (December 7), which is back after last year's stunning show with harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani. Esfahani returns to 92Y this month, accompanying violinist Stefan Jackiw on an ambitious program of 18th- and 20th-century sonatas (December 6).
