On previous visits to Brighton, Sean McCall of the Showstoppers company recalls their creation of an improvised musical set on the Palace Pier, amongst other places. Tonight, the audience gives the 6-strong cast the task of producing Cheap As Chips - the Musical set in the cheap seats of the balcony of the Theatre Royal that they are sitting in.
The Other Palace was intended to be a 'space where writers and producers can try out and refine new work'. Showstopper! The Improvised Musical only seems to be aiming for half of this ethos. Alas, it seems doubtful that last night's Cream of Yorkshire will ever be further refined. Yet, the performers' wits and synchronicity are such that the result is quite incredibly refined - considering the whole show is spontaneously made up, based on prompts from the audience.
Showstopper! The Improvised Musical will play a strictly limited eight-week run at The Other Palace from Today 22 January, delivering 8 brand new completely spontaneous musicals every week, alongside their regular monthly performances in the West End's Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. During the run the company will celebrate their 1000th unique, one-of-a-kind performance.
