After five years, four venues, and a tragedy worthy of a Russian novel, The Great Comet of 1812 has thrown its final revelries.

Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 closes today, September 3. The twelve-time Tony nominated new musical concludes its run just weeks after the controversy of replacing Okieriete Onaodowan with Mandy Patinkin - who withdrew from the production following public outcry.

Cast members from the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 celebrated their Broadway run with an encore performance at Broadway at W New York on Sunday, August 27th at 7:30 pm. Multi-platinum recording artist Ingrid Michaelson has joined the cast of Broadway's Tony Award-winning musical NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 as Sonya. Michaelson will be performing the role from July 3 to August 15, while Brittain Ashford, who originated the role of 'Sonya' takes a temporary leave from the show. Ashford will return to THE GREAT COMET on August 16. Ingrid Michaelson will not be performing August 2 through August 6.

In this febrile climate, do we want societal critique from our theatre or pure escapism? As I experienced when I recently swapped BroadwayWorld UK Editor duties for a New York trip, both theatrical regions are currently just as charged by provocative, resonant commentary as by jazz hands ­– as this year's Tony Award nominations reflect.
