Ardent Sons is a rock and roll band from Oakland, California, fronted by Flamin' Groovies drummer Tony T. Sales. Their songs explore classic themes of love and loss, travels between broken homes and shaky relationships, and redemption in life's near-forgotten moments. Sales' musical career started with a lot of listening. By the time his dad and uncle gave him drums for his 10th birthday, he had already internalized their musical legacy, the elder Tony and brother Hunt having made legendary recordings with Iggy Pop, Todd Rundgren and David Bowie, among others. Years later, the jazz, R&B, and rock-and-roll that was drilled into his head would lay the foundation for his own music. After spending years working with several Bay Area groups including Oakland's art-rockers Everyone is Dirty, and late '70s SF punk band Negative Trend, Sales finally picked up a guitar and began writing in earnest. Following a few years of demo recordings, live shows, and line-up changes, Ardent Sons, whose principle members are Sales and Bay Area multi-instrumentalist Dave Flores, is ready to release their debut record, No More Than This. It is a sincere reflection on life unfolding, always looking up, but grounded in the impermanence of the human condition.

Similar to David Bowie's awe-inspiring physical transformation in the title role on Broadway, the current production of Bernard Pomerance's THE ELEPHANT MAN, a classic true-life tale and heart-wrenching story that depicts the best and the worst of humanity, presented by Thursday Night Theatre Club at the El Portal in NoHo, features an amazing performance by Tom Vitorino in the title role. His first appearance occurs with Merrick completely covered by filthy rags and laying in the dirt at a travelling Freak Show. But it is Vitorino's physical transformation, dressed only in Victorian-era underwear, as his deformities are described by his friend and savoir, Dr. Frederick Treves (John Ralston Craig), that sets the stage for the incredible production which follows that scene.

The record's blend of synthesizers, drum machines, and Vanderslice's unmistakable vocals has already been receiving praise from NPR, Stereogum, and Consequence of Sound, among others, and today he shares another new song, 'Spectral Dawn.' Vanderslice describes the track as 'a hymn to those who have disappeared into the ether: the lost loves, the obsessions, the dead. They've slipped through a trap door and are not accessible anymore. The remaining fragments of experience and memory are comforting and damaging at the same time.' Brooklyn Vegan, who premiered the song today, call it 'both lush and intimate, full off all sorts of interesting sonic touches - woozy synthesizers, waves of electrical current and ticking percussion.'
