Cork Opera House and PwC present THE CORK PROMS

Cork Opera House and PwC, Ireland's largest professional services organisation, are delighted to announce a new addition to the Cork Summer calendar, in association with Cork Midsummer Festival, the inaugural Cork Proms.

The Cork Proms will consist of three successive concerts, featuring the celebrated Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra (COHCO) and a host of special local, national, and international, guests. Produced by Cork Opera House, The Cork Proms will be a celebration of music, of summer, and of Cork, curated by director Wayne Jordan, well known to audiences through his direction of The Wizard of Oz and ProdiJIG: The Revolution, and renowned conductor John O'Brien.

Cork Opera House CEO, Eibhín Gleeson, says, "The Cork Proms will be an incredible opportunity to create a very special event on Cork's annual musical calendar. We are very lucky to have access to an enormous wealth of home-grown talent, orchestral players, musicians, vocalists, and creatives. The Cork Proms will harness all of this in one place over three nights and we are delighted to be working with PwC."

Ger O'Mahoney, PwC Senior Partner, PwC Cork, said: "We are thrilled to be teaming up with Cork Opera House as Title Sponsor for the inaugural Cork Proms in 2019. We have no doubt that this will become a fantastic feature in Cork in the summers to come, and we welcome the opportunity to join together with one of Cork's proudest institutions in creating a very special series of events."

The Cork Opera House Concert Orchestra was established in 2015 and since then has presented a number of magnificent evenings on the Opera House Stage. Ms Gleeson continued, "The Cork Proms is a new platform for the orchestra to shine, to celebrate what we're made of musically and to treat the people of this region to concerts that are truly of an international standard. We look forward to welcoming you all."

Director Wayne Jordan says he is excited to be returning to the Cork Opera House for The Cork Proms: "It will be a great privilege to work with the phenomenal Cork Opera House Orchestra in a series of events that will show off the orchestra's virtuosity, its colour, and its character."

The Cork Proms will kick off with an evening of orchestral magnificence on Midsummer Night, June 21st, under the baton of Maestro, John O'Brien, when the orchestra will perform music by Mendelssohn, Mozart and Vivaldi, drawing from the theme of Midsummer which will explore how nature inspired these composers to write some of the most beautiful orchestral works.

On Saturday, June 22nd, audiences will be taken on a journey through the best loved American musicals. The Orchestra, and guest vocalists, will perform hits from the masters of musicals including Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, and many more. Cork Opera House will welcome multi-award winning composer and conductor, Cathal Synnott (Riverdance, Threepenny Opera), to conduct.

Sunday, June 23rd will feature a homage to the world of pop music with performances by Cork singing royalty, Majella Cullagh, Kim Sheehan, Laoise Leahy, Karen Underwood and more. Audiences can expect a night of musical fireworks as the series closes with an electrifying take on classics from David Bowie, to Queen, to Leonard Cohen.

The Cork Proms will bring together a group of featured singers and instrumentalists in a series of concerts brimming with the passion, sparkle, and fizz of an Irish summer. Lorraine Maye from Cork Midsummer said "we are thrilled to present The Cork Proms as part of the Festival this year. Experiencing beautiful, uplifting, and exhilarating orchestral music is the perfect way to spend balmy Midsummer nights."

Wayne Jordan concluded, "in this enterprise I will be joined by the indomitable John O'Brien and my own, long time, collaborator, Cathal Synnott - I can't wait."
