BWW Review: Excellent Performances Populate DANCE NATION at Wilbury Theatre Group

Friedrich Nietzsche said, 'He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying.' In Dance Nation, currently running at The Wilbury Theatre Group, the hopeful young dancers put everything they can into learning and perfecting how to dance, so that it might eventually help them take flight.

BWW Review: DIRTY CRUSTY, The Yard Theatre

It's not been a long time since Clare Barron took both New York and London by storm with her 2018 play Dance Nation, whose portrayal of a group of teenage competitive dancers had gloriously ruptured into feminist fireworks. Her next work to appear on a London stage is not a new play, but an earlier piece titled Dirty Crusty. Directed by Jay Miller, this hyped-up production at The Yard thrusts itself upon the audience with a near-reckless openness, but consistently proves devoid of anything that could transform its daring, even subversive, spirit into meaningful substance.

A provocative new festival piece, a premiere Australian work, reimagined international and Australian classics and a post-modern masterpiece that rocks the very foundations of theatre itself are just some of the highlights making up State Theatre Company South Australia's 2020 season, the first program from its new artistic director Mitchell Butel.

BWW Review: DANCE NATION at San Francisco Playhouse Intrigues but Ultimately Mystifies

I was super excited to learn that SF Playhouse was kicking off its 19-20 season with Clare Barron's a?oeDance Nationa?? based on what I'd read and heard about its 2018 world premiere at New York's Playwrights Horizons. I was certain it was going to be right up my alley: an edgy, satirical, unsettling play that looks at gender, body image, burgeoning sexuality and our unhealthy obsession with competition and winning a?' and from a feminist perspective to boot. As added enticement, the play won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was a 2019 Pulitzer finalist. It thus makes me very sad to report that, having now actually seen the play, I am left mystified by the rapturous response it received in prior productions.

BWW Review: DANCE NATION is Brash, Brazen, and Unabashedly Beautiful

DANCE NATION is a visceral, unyielding portrayal of the journey from child to adult. Barron's blistering new work marvels at the force and intensity of teenage girls and the subsequent undermining of that innate power. Brash, brazen, and unabashedly beautiful, it thrills and arrests audiences from start to finish. All together, the cast and creative team have perfectly captured the story's aching tenderness, biting humor, and undeniable life force.
