What did our critic think of GUYS AND DOLLS at Theatre Memphis?

The 38th annual Ostrander Awards, spotlighting excellence in theater in Memphis, was a night that Theatre Memphis could truly celebrate.

Guys and Dolls will be the opening musical at Theatre Memphis on August 19, 2022, to inaugurate 101st consecutive season that the community theatre has produced.  Known to be one of the most popular of the classic American musicals, it runs through September 11, 2022.

Theatre Memphis’ newest production (CICADA) which opened this past weekend and runs through April 16th explores the difference between a memory and a ghost and what it means to be haunted by both. Memories, like ghosts, are just manifestations (internal versus external) of the people in our lives (often family) who shaped, loved, and inspired us. Or they’re recollections (real or imagined) of kinfolk who sometimes shamed, tormented, and frightened us. Perhaps they’re both. There’s an argument to be made (generally speaking) when people utter the phrase, “Family is forever,” it’s supposed to be a good thing, but what if it’s not? What if your family offers nothing but a long lineage of misery and pain? What to do? Where to go?

Feathers will be flying when La Cage aux Folles opens at Theatre Memphis in the Lohrey Theatre for a run March 4 – 27, 2022.

Mamma Mia! kicks off Theatre Memphis' 99th season on the Lohrey Stage and runs August 16 - September 8, 2019. 

Playwright Evan Linder achieves a fascinating balance in the poignant 'Byhalia, Missississippi.' While it's hard to fully root for any character, it's equally difficult to dismiss them completely, and that balance allows the show to explore deep, often difficult themes head-on.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announces Jack Falahee, star of ABC's How to Get Away With Murder, to play the role of Jim in the heartfelt comedy, Byhalia, Mississippi, playwright Evan Linder's uncompromising exploration of race, infidelity, and family. Directed by Kimberly Senior (director of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Disgraced on Broadway), Byhalia, Mississippi will play the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater for four weeks, June 7-July 7, 2019. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a fast-paced and witty musical, literally litters the stage with letters during its run at Theatre Memphis in the Next Stage, November 2 - 17, 2018.  Mid-pubescents (played by adults) vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime and learn that winning (and losing) isn't everything. Hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, life un-affirming 'ding' of the bell that signals a spelling mistake, they candidly disclose hilarious and touching stories from their home lives. A truly fresh and vibrant score makes this musical 'Bee' unforgettable.

An Act of God proclaims its Regional Premiere at Theatre Memphis in the Next Stage, April 6-22, 2018. It turns out that God is sinfully funny as he introduces a radical rewrite of the Ten Commandments. Sometimes using strong language and acerbic humor, he answers existential questions that have plagued mankind since creation ... all in 90 minutes.
