As I arrive, things in the Walter Kerr Theatre seem fairly at ease. The team is joking and bantering across the house, and the actors mill about comfortably. But, work is happening fervently all around me. Between acts, the play travels 50 years in a 15 minute intermission, and the crew is busy dressing the not-quite-dry set. Will the sanding (and the noise that comes with it) be done in time for the run? And the milling actors are not shy with their questions for playwright Bruce Norris, or director Pam MacKinnon.

I walk into the Walter Kerr and the first thing I see is the wreckage. The house on stage looks like hell, graffiti on the walls, doors off their hinges, and the mirror on the door in the bathroom is smashed. Today, tech rehearsal starts early on in Act Two, as the characters try to hash out the socio-political ramifications of the middle-class white couple trying to demolish this formerly beautiful house in a predominately black neighborhood in order to build a larger, more garish model for the family they're trying to start.

Despite their best efforts, director Lauren Shouse and her amazingly talented cast just can't give Tracy Lett's Superior Donuts the emotional heft-the literary gravitas-that the playwright so mightily struggles for in his sitcomesque script which pales in comparison to his supposed masterpiece, August: Osage County. Clearly, it's the success of that earlier, heavily-decorated and awarded, Pulitzer Prize-winning play that most theatre companies are invoking as they attempt to sell tickets to this decidedly lesser work, hoping to capitalize on its success in hoodwinking an unsuspecting audience.

Philadelphia Theatre Company will expand its PTC@Play project into an annual Festival beginning next spring thanks to support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knight Arts Challenge, a $9 million initiative supporting innovative projects that inspire and enrich Philadelphia's communities.

Off-Broadway theater company Playwrights Horizons will hold its annual Spring Gala on Monday evening, June 11th at the event space 583 Park Avenue. Titled "The Highest Standard", the evening will celebrate its five Pulitzer Prize-winning productions and honor the creators of these memorable works for the theater. The honorees are James Lapine (Sunday in the Park with George), Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park), Stephen Sondheim (Sunday in the Park with George), Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy), Wendy Wasserstein (The Heidi Chronicles) and Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife).

Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards and Managing Director Linda DiGabriele just announced Asolo Repertory Theatre's 54th season, containing four Pulitzer Prize winning plays, Three Tony Award® winners and one world premiere, all centering around the theme The American Character.

Lincoln Center Theater has announced two productions that will open this fall: a 75th Anniversary production of the Clifford Odets' classic GOLDEN BOY, to be directed by Bartlett Sher beginning performances Thursday November 8 and opening Monday, December 3 at a Broadway theatre to be announced; and the New York premiere of VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE a new play by Christopher Durang, to be directed by Nicholas Martin, beginning performances Thursday, October 25 and opening Monday, November 12 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater (150 West 65 Street).

Tickets for the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Clybourne Park will be made available to the general public tomorrow, Saturday, March 3. Clybourne Park will open on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Thursday, April 19 (preview performances begin on March 26) for a limited 16-week engagement.
