The annual Judith Barlow Prize is awarded to a student playwright for an exceptional one-act play inspired by the work of an historic female playwright. The winner of the prize receives a $2,500 award and a reading of their work, with a $500 award to the participating professor.

The Kennedy Center Announces 50th KCACTF National Festival

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosts more than 120 outstanding theater students from colleges and universities across the nation as part of the 50th annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF), which runs April 16-20, 2019 in multiple locations throughout the Center. The Center also announced the national awardees for the KCACTF. Selected awardees and representatives will be brought to Washington, D.C. for an expense-paid trip to participate in the National Festival. These student artists from across the United States have been recognized for their outstanding work from the eight regional festivals that were held January 8 through February 28, 2019.

Samuel French announces that award-winning playwright and cabaret artist Charles Busch (The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Psycho Beach Party, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom) has happily stepped in for the previously announced Lauren Yee (The King of the Yees, The Great Leap, The Hatmaker's Wife) who had to recuse herself due to a scheduling conflict.

Judges Announced For Samuel French OOB Festival

The Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, the nation's premier short play competition, takes place August 21-25 at The Vineyard's Dimson 15th Street Theatre. Chosen from over 850 submissions from the U.S. and abroad, 30 finalist plays and musicals, each running 10-30 minutes in length, will be presented. The Saturday, August 25th presentation is the culmination of the week-long festival at which the Samuel French staff will choose the winning six pieces for licensing and publication in an anthology.

Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company to Produce Ninth Annual Museum of Dysfunction

For the ninth year running, Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company (MU) will produce two weekends of new works at the annual Museum of Dysfunction short play festival. The festival has become a staple of the summer theatre calendar featuring local talent and plays that probe the dark and funny edges of the everyday. Nineteen short plays were selected from over 100 entries by emerging and established writers nationwide, with nine spots held exclusively for high school and college students as a way to encourage their craft and build their portfolio. The festival will run over two consecutive weekends: June 29-July 1 and July 6-8, 2017 at Studio 101 in Spring Street Studios, located minutes from downtown Houston in Historic First Ward.
