Body Awareness is the first major play from Pulitzer Prize winner and MacArthur Fellow, Annie Baker. Having been heralded by the playwright as a "play about issues that isn't an 'issue play'" this show follows Phyllis, a psychology professor organizing a "Body Awareness Week" on campus, her partner Joyce, and Joyce's adult son Jared. The underlying tensions of the household are augmented by the presence of a visiting photographer, Frank, whose subjects of choice offend Phyllis. Yes, Dear Readers, it's "Uncle Vanya" … again. Now, don't get confused. I know I just reviewed this a few weeks ago but this is a different production. This is Theatre9/12, those plucky actors who pour over scene work week after week until they come up with a full play they'd like to present, this time it's Annie Baker's adaptation of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya". They're all about the performance and not so much on the frills since there's usually little in the way of sets or elaborate costumes and they perform at the Trinity Church Parish Hall. And while they usually bring in a fantastic piece, this time it felt they focused a bit too much on individual scene work and not so much on connecting with each other as the play felt like so many performances in a vacuum.
In its Seattle premiere, Annie Baker's supernatural drama JOHN will play at ArtsWest starting March 14 and run Thursday through Sunday until April 7. Legendary performers Marianne Owen and Suzy Hunt will join ArtsWest newcombers Mi Kang and Sean Lally under the direction of Erin Murray.

Most of our cultural stories (plays, movies, news stories) are about the first group. In THE DELAYS, now in its world premiere at Theatre Vertigo, Sara Jean Accuardi gives us a look into the lives of some people in the second group. It's a moving, well-crafted play that shows how easy it is to get trapped.
