Broadway And Local Talent Join Forces For Riverdale YM-YWHA Gala's GUYS AND DOLLS

Broadway luminaries and Riverdale's most talented performers will join forces for a Gala concert production of the classic musical comedy GUYS AND DOLLS, Frank Loesser's immortal musical fable of Broadway. The one-night only gala event will be held at the Riverdale YM-YWHA on Sunday, June 17, 2018, and will begin at 4:00pm. The performance and honoree ceremony will be preceded by a cocktail hour and entertainment by the award-winning Riverdale Rising Stars youth theatre company.

No longer will we have to deal with the unpredictable LIRR to see a hit musical, we can see a big Broadway show with big Broadway names both on and offstage right here on Long Island. The New Black Fest and The Lark, two theater organizations dedicated to celebrating and advocating for stories that explore the intersection of art and social justice, are proud to announce the fifth annual The New Black Fest at The Lark. This week-long event is aimed at showcasing diverse and provocative work in a festival of Black theater artists from throughout the Diaspora, and will feature talkbacks, a panel event, and staged readings of four plays-in-progress. The festival will take place April 9-13, 2018, and will include works by 2017 Djerassi Writer in Residence France-Luce Benson (Deux Femmes On the Edge De La Revolution), 2018 Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award recipient Donja R. Love (soft), 2015 Princess Grace Award-Winner Jonathan Payne (Brother Rabbit), and artist, activist, and The New Black Fest alum Liza Jessie Peterson (Sistergurls and the Squirrel) who has performed excerpts of her one-person play The Peculiar Patriot in over 35 penitentiaries across the country.

The Guthrie Theater (Joseph Haj, Artistic Director) today announced seven of the eight productions to be offered as part of the theater's 2018-2019 subscription season, including Playing with Fire by Barbara Field based upon the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Metamorphoses, written and directed by Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman, and the renowned musical comedy Guys and Dolls on the Wurtele Thrust Stage, and Michael Frayn's Noises Off, The Great Leap by rising playwright Lauren Yee, Cyrano de Bergerac, adapted and directed by Joseph Haj, and the world premiere of Floyd's, a Guthrie commission by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, on the McGuire Proscenium Stage.

Lacey Township High School will present its spring musical, Guys and Dolls, on April 26-28, 2018 at 7:00 pm and a matinee performance on April 29 at 2:00 pm in the LTHS Auditorium. The spring musical is an annual production of the school's performing arts department and the final theatrical presentation for the school year.

My first association with musical composer Frank Loesser was as an actor in the 70s in a revue of his music. I played Sky Masterson of Guys and Dolls and sang a duet of 'I've Never Been In Love Before'. I came to realize quite rapidly how lovely his music is and how well he manages to capture the moment of genuine emotion within a song. Upon seeing Guys and Dolls several times since, I have been awestruck as well by Abe Burrows' and Joe Swerling's ability to take Damon Runyon's New York Broadway characters from the 20s and 30s and blow them up into something overwhelmingly moving and appealing. The two worlds of sin and redemption have never been connect
