In the light of Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement, the term 'gaslighting' has become part of the discourse around abusive behaviour. Many may not realise that it originates from Patrick Hamilton's thriller Gaslight, written in 1938, in which - for reasons later discovered - the dastardly Mr Manningham tries to trick his wife Bella into thinking she is losing her mind. It's part of a pattern of what we would now recognise as coercive control.

The curtain goes up on a new season at Mercer County Community College's (MCCC's) Kelsey Theatre with "Memphis." Presented by PinnWorth Productions, this hit Broadway musical offers up a dramatized account of the roots of rock and roll and radio's role in embracing the new sounds that transformed the country. Dates and show times are: Fridays, Sept. 8 and 15 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 9 and 16 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Sept. 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is located on the college's West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. A reception with the cast and crew follows the opening night performance on Sept. 8.

Man to Man by Manfred Karge was first performed in 1982 and catapulted Tilda Swinton to fame when she starred in the 1987 production. Written before the destruction of the Berlin Wall, it is apt that it should be performed now given that it is the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall. Set in Germany through the 1920s and 30s, it tells the story of Ella Gericke, a German woman who takes on her husband's identity after he dies, becoming known as Max Gericke.

Created, written and directed by Randy Johnson, the production is produced in partnership with The Pasadena Playhouse and Milwaukee Repertory Theater, in association with Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich of One Night Productions, The Estate of Janis Joplin and Jeff Jampol of JAM, Inc. One Night with Janis Joplin runs June 21-August 11, 2013 in the Kreeger Theater.
