Blue Monday was a one-act 'jazz opera' by George Gershwin. The libretto was written by Buddy DeSylva. The story is set in Harlem, inside a 'colored saloon', that is, a bar intended for African-Americans, where we see Joe, a gambler, planning to use his winnings to visit his sick mother, without sharing his plans with his beloved Vi.
