David Bridel BIO

David Bridel served as dean of the USC School of Dramatic Arts from 2016 to 2020, and was the inaugural holder of the Braverman Family Dean’s Chair. Prior to his appointment as dean, he served as interim dean of the School of Dramatic Arts (2015-2016), associate dean of global initiatives (2013-2015), and director of the school’s MFA in Acting program (2014-2016).

An accomplished director, choreographer, playwright, librettist and performer, Dean Bridel’s work in these disciplines has been seen at the Mark Taper Forum, the Odyssey Theater, the Ford Amphitheatre, the Los Angeles Theatre Ensemble and the Broad Stage in Los Angeles; the BMI Musical Workshop and the Bound for Broadway series in New York; at Shakespeare & Company and Barrington Stage in Mass.; the Roy Hart Theatre in Malerargues, France; the TEDxUSC conference 2012 and TEDxBeijing 2014; in opera houses in Los Angeles, Paris, Vienna, Munich, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Santiago and Madrid; on screen (PBS’ Great Performances series and ABC’s Dancing With the Stars); and at universities, festivals and theatres in the U.S., U.K., Israel, China, Hong Kong, Australia, Austria and Brazil – including the Beijing Film Academy, the National Theatre of China and at the Stanislavsky Institute in Sao Paulo.


Bridel’s original plays Lunatics and Actors , I Gelosi and Sublimity are published by Original Works Press (Sublimity, Bridel’s solo performance, won the Best Satire Award at the 2013 United Solo Festival in New York). He is also the winner of an ARC grant from the Center for Cultural Initiatives, a cultural engagement grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, an Entertainment Weekly Special Events Award, a NYFA Fiction Award, an Anna Sosenko Musical Theater Award, and a Zumberge Award for his research project, Clowns Across Continents. He also co-authored the recent book Clowns: In Conversation With Modern Masters, published by Routledge, and his adaptation of Doctor Faustus, directed by Andre Belgrader, performed at Classic Stage Company in New York in 2015.

Directed by David Bridel, the performance schedule is Friday 6/2 at 8pm; Friday 6/9 at 5pm; Saturday 6/10 at 4pm; Thursday 6/15 at 10pm, Saturday 6/17 at 1pm, Sunday 6/18 at 5:30pm, and Saturday 6/24 at 10pm. Running time is 75 minutes.

Westport Country Playhouse Presents Reading Of THE SCREAM


Westport Country Playhouse will present a Script in Hand playreading of “The Scream: A Musical Comedy Fantasy,” on Monday, June 13, at 7 p.m. The live performance will be captured on film for on-demand streaming, from Thursday, June 16 through Sunday, June 19. Script in Hand playreadings offer intimate storytelling as professional actors bring the words to life without sets or costumes.

BOTH AND (a Play About Laughing While Black) Extends at Boston Court Pasadena


Boston Court Pasadena has announced five additional performances of its first in-person, onstage production since early 2020, the world premiere of Both And (a play about laughing while black) by Carolyn Ratteray. Directed by Andi Chapman and performed by Ratteray, the run has been extended through Sunday, May 22.

Boston Court Pasadena has announced its first in-person, onstage production since early 2020, the world premiere of Both And (a play about laughing while black) by Carolyn Ratteray. Directed by Andi Chapman and performed by Ratteray, previews will begin on Thursday, April 7 and continue through Friday, April 15. Opening is set for Saturday, April 16, at 8pm and the run will continue through Sunday, May 15. The performance schedule is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm.

Noise Now Announces Fall 2020 Programming


In alignment with A Noise Within's (ANW) season theme of Spirits Rising, Noise Now will further expand its reach for fall 2020 by partnering with ten Los Angeles cultural arts organizations for ten events beginning in late August through the beginning of January. The fall season was announced last week via Facebook Live by ANW Director of Cultural Programming Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx. Launched in February 2019 and now in its second year, Noise Now is a cultural initiative by A Noise Within aimed at sharing artistic resources and producing events that are radically accessible to all audiences, including underrepresented groups, communities of color, young people, and anyone who may not be equitably represented in theatre.

The Clown School LA Is Opening Branches In Chicago & The Washington D.C.


THE CLOWN SCHOOL, the Los Angeles-based studio devoted to teaching and promoting the art of clowning and related physical theatre disciplines, is expanding its offerings nationwide. Beginning now and running through 2019 and beyond, The Clown School is thrilled to announce the official opening of new branches in Chicago (IL), Annapolis (MD) and Lorton (VA). The classes in Chicago will be taught by Jeremy Aluma. The classes in Annapolis (MD) and Lorton (VA) will be taught by Mike Funt. Additionally, the School is launching an Online Certificate Training in Clown - the first of its kind in the world.

Coin & Ghost in association with Vs. Theatre Company present the World premiere of Love Is Another Country, a radical reimagining of Sophocles's Antigone at Vs. Theatre in Los Angeles from Friday, February 1 through Saturday, March 2, 2019. The third production of Coin & Ghost's inaugural season, Love Is Another Country is a new play written by the prolific Bay Area theatre artist Lisa Marie Rollins and her first full-length work to be produced in Los Angeles. Directed by Kendall Johnson, the production brings together the ancient tale of Antigone with the deaths of innumerable black men and women at the hands of police. Part ritual, part rage, part collective ask to the audience, the play follows three women of the Chapman family as they navigate living as black women in a country that claims to love them. Theater's next generation of actors will come from all over the globe, to be certain, but one might find an impressive concentration of artists on the campus of the University of Southern California, where the 2018 list of candidates for the Master of Fine Arts in acting rivals any group to be found anywhere. Take Isadora Lee Cintron Moya, for example. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, she earned her bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Puerto Rico, where she was a member of the university's acclaimed Traveling Theatre Group.

PRESENT LAUGHTER's Kate Burton Joins Faculty at USC School of Dramatic Arts


Three-time Emmy and Tony Award nominee Kate Burton will be joining the faculty of the USC School of Dramatic Arts as professor and master artist, beginning in fall 2017. Burton, who is currently starring with Kevin Kline in the Broadway revival of Noel Coward's backstage comedy, Present Laughter, is recognized as one of the industry's most versatile actresses.

Dean's Chair Endowed at USC School of Dramatic Arts


Trojan parent Steve Braverman has endowed the Braverman Family Dean's Chair at the USC School of Dramatic Arts in honor of the school's new dean, David Bridel. This is the largest gift to Dramatic Arts and the second major gift to the school since Bridel was named dean in April, 2016.
