He won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “King Lear” and the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Actor in 1986. Additionally, he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for “The Lady from Dubuque” in 1980 and received an Emmy Award nomination for his work in the television film "The Madness of King George" in 1990.
