Photo Flash: Shakespeare Theatre Company Celebrates Artistic Director, Michael Kahn

On Sunday, June 16, Washington, D.C.'s theatre community gathered to celebrate the end of MICHAEL KAHN's 33-year tenure as Artistic Director of Shakespeare Theatre Company with musical and dramatic performances, special guests from the worlds of entertainment, politics, and media, and a mayoral proclamation.

B Street Theatre Presents THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE

The Legend of Georgia McBride received its World Premiere at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in December of 2014 and since then, has become one of the most produced new plays in American regional theatres with productions by Marin Theatre, The Guthrie, Arden Theatre, ACT in Seattle, Cygnet Theatre Company, Hippodrome State Theatre, Uptown Theatres, and others.

BWW Review: Guthrie Theater's THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE is a Sweet and Fun Story of Love, Friendship, Community, and Finding Oneself

Reminiscent of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES and KINKY BOOTS, but with a spirit and humor all its own, THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE is a drag show with a beautiful message of finding one's identity and embracing those you love as they discover their identity. What it doesn't resemble so much is playwright Matthew Lopez's other work seen recently on #TCTheater stages, the intense Civil War drama THE WHIPPING MAN, a beautiful and heart-breaking play done by Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company last year. Which just goes to show the range of the playwright, although I think it's safe to say that GEORGIA MCBRIDE is the more personal work. Similar to the protagonist Casey, he found himself in a drag club in Florida, although the details of the story are different. GEORGIA MCBRIDE is a really fun show, and you also may learn a bit about drag performance, and rethink some stereotypes about the real people behind all the glitz and glamour of the show.

BWW Review: THE GREAT SOCIETY at Arena Stage - LBJ Comes Alive Again!

Thank you Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith for bringing to the Washington Area the sequel writer Robert Schenkkan's two part series on President Lyndon Baines Johnson. First there was the Tony Winning ALL THE WAY which dealt with Johnson ascending the presidency while THE GREAT SOCIETY picks up at Johnson's State of the Union message in 1965 after his massive election victory.

BWW Review: LBJ Completes His Term in Arena Stage's THE GREAT SOCIETY

It will take biographer Robert Caro five volumes to complete his portrait of Lyndon B. Johnson, so it's no surprise that there's a second LBJ play from Robert Schenkkan.

BWW Review: THE SANTALAND DIARIES Brings Irreverent Cheer to Drafthouse Comedy Theater

For the cynics among us who need to look beyond THE NUTCRACKER and A CHRISTMAS CAROL for holiday entertainment, THE SANTALAND DIARIES at Drafthouse Comedy Theater offers a quirky alternative. Cameron Folmar plays a disaffected department store Christmas elf in this consistently funny solo show adapted from a cult-classic monologue by humorist David Sedaris.

Chronicling LBJ's second term as he seeks to maintain his relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and complete a raft of impossibly ambitious social policy projects, The Great Society runs February 2-March 11, 2018 on the Fichandler Stage.

BWW Review: THE SCHOOL FOR LIES at Shakespeare Theatre Company

DC is a topsy-turvy, satirical farce; or so it seems this morning. Happily, so is The School for Lies. At least The School for Lies is fiction and man, it felt good to laugh.
