KIMBERLY AKIMBO to Open at Long Beach Playhouse
David Lindsay-Abaire’s play will run June 6 through July 3 at the Long Beach Playhouse Studio Theatre.
Long Beach Playhouse will present KIMBERLY AKIMBO by David Lindsay-Abaire from June 6 through July 3, 2026 in the Studio Theatre.
The play follows Kimberly, a teenager living with a rare condition that causes her to age rapidly. As she navigates high school, family instability, first love, and questions about mortality, she forms a connection with Jeff, a classmate who shares her unconventional outlook on life.
Sean Gray, Producing Artistic Director for Long Beach Playhouse, said the company selected the play for its perspective on resilience and humanity.
“Kimberly is teenager, in an older woman's body, experiencing a new school, a first love, and the reality of mortality running toward her. In this show we see humanity, for the good, the bad, and the absurd,” Gray said.
The production will be directed by Michael Hovance, a member of the Playhouse Board of Directors who previously directed a production in the company’s New Works Festival and has appeared in several Playhouse productions as an actor.
The cast includes Erin Rose, Sallie Eskin, Ben Primas, and returning company member Patrick Peterson. Four members of the five-person cast are making their Playhouse debut.
Executive Director Madison Mooney said, “I relate to Kimberly, she sees life as an adventure. There is no sad ending. Kimberly doesn't give up, she takes control of her life, and sets off on a road trip, like any normal teenager would do.”
Special Events
Special performances for the production will include a Pay What You Can performance on June 4, a $10 preview performance on June 5, and an Opening Night Champagne Reception on June 6. The opening night event is sponsored by The Port of Long Beach.
