After Caitlin Gabriel is seriously injured, but survives, a deadly shooting at her high school, she struggles to tell her story to her parents, the authorities, her priest, and anyone who will listen. But there are other stories circulating about Caitlin’s possible involvement that gain purchase in the media and paint her in a different light. One narrative presents Joy, a deceased classmate, as a heroic martyr, while Caitlin is a shamed coward. Renowned Hollywood screenwriter Scott Z. Burns returns to the stage with this bold and chilling play that doesn’t try to find clear motivations for the crime, like a detective story. Instead, he considers how such events affect those who survive them, and asks us to examine our relationship to the truth and how lies can sometimes claim to heal us.
