While New York audiences are often drawn to the city’s established stages, new spaces for performance continue to emerge across disciplines. This spring, NYC EATSS 2026 offers a different kind of stage, one where dance, music, and cultural storytelling intersect in an intimate setting.

At the center of that experience is dancer and choreographer Nakeema King, whose work brings together contemporary movement and Indigenous tradition in ways that challenge conventional boundaries.

A Contemporary Dance Practice Rooted in Tradition

Nakeema King, a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance, has trained across a wide range of styles including modern, contemporary, hip-hop, house, locking, popping, and tap. Her work reflects both technical versatility and a strong commitment to cultural expression.

As an enrolled member of the Upper Skagit Tribe and a descendant of the Choctaw Nation, the Swinomish Tribe, and the Klamath Nation, King approaches dance as both an artistic and cultural practice. Her choreography explores the intersection of powwow traditions with contemporary and street dance forms, creating a movement language that is both rooted and evolving.

Her collaborations with artists such as Cynthia Oliver, Laja Fields, Rennie Harris, and The Limón Company further reflect her range across both experimental and established performance spaces.

Expanding Indigenous Representation in Dance

King’s work is part of a broader effort to increase Indigenous visibility within the dance world, where Native perspectives have historically been underrepresented.

Through performance and choreography, she aims to create space for Indigenous stories within contemporary dance, while also building pathways for future artists. Her long-term vision includes developing a company grounded in Indigenous perspectives and creating work that connects past and present through movement.

In doing so, her work challenges audiences to reconsider how Indigenous culture is represented on stage, not as static tradition, but as a living and evolving form of expression.

A Multi-Disciplinary Performance Experience

NYC EATSS 2026 brings together artists across disciplines, creating a performance environment that moves between dance, music, and storytelling.

Joining King are Twyla Baker and her daughter, Hobawea Nahish Demaray, who return to the event following a previous performance that resonated strongly with audiences. Their vocal performances draw on generational traditions, offering a sense of continuity and shared cultural experience.

Together, these performances contribute to an evening that blends artistic expression with cultural education.

Performance Beyond Traditional Venues

While not a traditional theater production, NYC EATSS offers a format that reflects a growing trend in performance, where art is experienced in more immersive and interdisciplinary environments.

Set at Chelsea Piers, the event creates a space where audiences encounter performance alongside cuisine and conversation, allowing for a more layered and participatory experience.

A Different Kind of Stage

For artists like Nakeema King, spaces like NYC EATSS represent an opportunity to reach new audiences and expand how performance is experienced.

By integrating dance with storytelling, music, and community, the event reflects a broader shift toward more inclusive and multidimensional artistic platforms.

In a city known for its stages, NYC EATSS offers something different. Not a traditional performance, but a shared cultural experience where movement, voice, and narrative come together in one space.
