One of the most beloved modern dance pioneers of our time, Mary Anthony (who celebrated her 96th birthday on November 11th), will present her Mary Anthony Dance Theatre in a dance to celebrate the holiday season - her "Ceremony of Carols," set to music by Benjamin Britten. Premiered in 1971, the work is a retelling of the nativity scene with scenes titled "That younge child," "This little babe," "The Annunciation," and "Deo Gratias." Performances are Saturday December 15 at 8 PM and Sunday December 16 at 3 PM in the Anthony Studio, 736 Broadway (just downtown of 8th Street).
Also on the program will be a Daniel Maloney trio danced by three women from Philadelphia's Dancefusion, directed by longtime Anthony disciple and company member Gwendolyn Bye. Ellen Robbins will present selected works by her students; Rachel Cohen has created a solo "I Would," and there will also be a duet danced by company members Mary Staub and Andrea Pastorella.
Born in Kentucky 96 years ago, Mary Anthony began her career in the early 1940's with a scholarship from Hanya Holm, subsequently joining the Holm Company, concertizing with Joseph Gifford, appearing in Broadway shows, enjoying a long association as a choreographer for the Italian musical theatre, choreographer for religious shows in the early days of TV, and much more. Ms. Anthony is recognized as one of the leaders in the modern dance movement, as dancer, choreographer, and teacher.
Her company, the Mary Anthony Dance Theatre was founded in 1956 and has a repertory that includes works by Anna Sokolow, Lester Horton, Charles Weidman, Ross Parkes, Daniel Maloney, and Bertram Ross. Mary's works have been added to the repertories of the Pennsylvania Ballet, Bat-Dor Company of Israel, the Dublin City Ballet, and the national Institute for the Arts in Taiwan. She was a longtime teacher of movement at the Herbert Berghof Studio for Actors, and has directed her own school for many years at 736 Broadway.
