The Cell To Premiere Joseph Hendel's KATZELMACHER U.S.A As Part Of Ongoing Residency Series
Nancy Manocherian's the cell (Artistic Director Kira Simring) in Chelsea, New York City has announced Joseph Hendel's adaptation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's classic play as part of their ongoing residency series.
Katzelmacher, U.S.A. tells the story of a group of aimless and sexually frustrated young people in Missouri as they grapple with an outsider who has come to work at the local winery. Freely adapted from Rainer Werner Fassbinder's classic, this new adaptation explores the middle-American identity in a changing world and the micro-aggressions that combust into tragedy.
The cast features Chris Blem, Sam Disney, Alex Galan, Francis Hartley, Chelsea LeSage, Heather O'Sullivan, Madeline Adelle Phillips, Brendt Reil, Ellen White, and Ryan Wright. The adaptation will be directed by Joseph Hendel and feature lighting design by Francis Hartley, set design by Bianca Nagel, assistant direction by Jeffrey Sims. Liz Flemming will be the production manager. The show will perform July 25, 26, and 27 at 7PM at the cell (338 W. 23rd St. New York, NY 10011) and tickets will be $12.
Joseph Hendel is a writer, director, and composer from New York. Recent plays include The Tasty Karp Hotel (Teatr Fredry in Gniezno, Poland), Playing with Masculinity (Have Art: Will Travel! Inc.), and Beware the Ides of Monday (the cell). Other directing credits: The Inner Circle (opera about Alfred Kinsey at the Brick Theater's F*ckfest), AVoid2Remember (Title:Point's?! Festival), Appendage (1st Irish Theater Fest) and works by Brecht, Ionesco, and Gilbert and Sullivan. He is a resident artist at the cell, a two-time member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, and is trained in clown and Commedia by master clown teacher Christopher Bayes. He is currently pursuing his MFA in Directing at UCSD. UCSD credits: Do You Feel Anger? by Mara Nelson-Greenberg (reading) and Tambo and Bones by Dave Harris. In his spare time he plays with synthesizers, reads German-Jewish critical theory texts, and plays with his pet chihuahua, Molière.
