59E59 Theaters Announces 2017 East to Edinburgh Festival Lineup

59E59 Theaters announces the 2017 line up for the annual EAST TO EDINBURGH festival. EAST TO EDINBURGH begins on Tuesday, July 11 for a limited engagement through Sunday, July 30.

The performance schedule varies. Performances are at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). Tickets to each EAST TO EDINBURGH show is $15 ($12 for 59E59 Members). Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticket Central at 212-279-4200 or online via www.59e59.org.

Created as a way to help shows get on their feet before flying off to Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (the largest arts festival in the world), EAST TO EDINBURGH simulates the same production constraints that all shows experience during the Fringe, while giving companies a clean, comfortable, and nurturing space to fine-tune their productions. This whirlwind festival, which takes over Theaters B & C in the month of July, features some of the most adventurous theater from around New York and across the US.

Peter Shaffer Award recipient Aisha Josiah brings us a tour de force solo show that explores gender identity, the roles we choose to play and the roles thrust upon us. DICKLESS follows two characters, Saff and Oli, as they recount their most adventurous evening in a small British working class town. Conforming to (and combatting) society's expectations leads them both down a dangerous path - one that will change the course of their lives forever.

After discovering her fiancé having sex with her best friend in a bar bathroom, Celeste reads a Snapple bottle cap the "real fact:" 'We can't stop ourselves from suffering, but we can learn how to suffer better.' Though devastated, Celeste is determined to learn what it means to suffer better, seeking out fellow sufferers to help her decode the factoid: a homeless man with a split personality, an octogenarian who invented a dating app, a mute maid longing for love, a clown enduring a bureaucratic nightmare, and an angry teen who threw a rock at Donald Trump's head. Which character is suffering best? It's up to the audience to decide.

PLACES is the story of trailblazer Alla Nazimova: 1920s silent screen icon, Broadway legend, and probably the most famous star you've never heard of. From a Jewish immigrant fleeing Tsarist Russia to the highest paid movie star in Tinseltown, Nazimova was the first female writer, director, and producer in Hollywood. With her visionary film Salome, art house cinema was born. Nazimova's infamous all-women's 'sewing circle,' a term she coined to describe her underground meetings of lesbian and bisexual film actresses in Hollywood, defied the moral and artistic codes of her time-and eventually forced her into obscurity. Romy Nordlinger's multimedia solo performance reimagines one of the most daring and censored artists of the 20th century.
