FOR THE SIERRA STAGES SUMMER 2015 PRODUCTION
OF THE OVER-THE-TOP MEL BROOKS MUSICAL “THE PRODUCERS”
Sierra Stages is pleased to announce open auditions for its summer 2015 production of the musical “The Producers” by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan. The show plays from July 16 –August 8, 2015 at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City. The director is Susan Mason, choreographer is George Jayne, and music director is Ken Getz.
From the brilliantly twisted mind of Mel Brooks comes this insanely funny adventure: A down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant concoct a get-rich scheme to bilk their investors out of millions by producing the most notorious musical flop in history. Based on Brooks’ Oscar-winning 1968 film, this Broadway smash hit and winner of a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards is a big, over-the-top, irreverent musical comedy like nothing you have ever seen before.
In addition to the principal roles, the show requires a multi-talented ensemble, all of whom must be able to sing, act, and dance/move, since everyone doubles, triples and quadruples other parts. Ensemble members have vocal lines, scene work, and dance production numbers. Ensemble members will create multiple comedic characters, so must have physical strength and stamina for physical comedy. The women will play lesbian lighting designer Shirley Markowitz, little old ladies named Hold Me-Touch Me and Lick Me-Bite Me, usherettes, showgirls, as well as Nazi storm troopers (women will double as men), first nighters, bums, nuns, bag ladies, and prison babes. The men play Roger’s gay production team, blind violinist, street cleaner, jury foreman/judge, First Nazi, Springtime for Hitler wannabes, as well as first nighters, cops, accountants, little old ladies (men to double women), bums, and prisoners.
There are two opportunities to audition: Wednesday January 7, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday January 11, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Auditions on both dates are at the Sierra Stages Rehearsal Studio, 343 Railroad Avenue in Nevada City.
