Synopsis:
X is a psychological sci-fi play by Alistair McDowall. It follows a skeleton crew stranded at a research base on Pluto. Completely cut off from a ruined Earth, the crew slowly loses their grip on reality and time as a mysterious, terrifying presence stalks them outside.
The play uses a surreal, unsettling atmosphere to explore themes of isolation, existential dread, and the breakdown of the human mind
Character Breakdown:
Gilda: Female, 20s-30s. Second-in-Command and Scientist. Anxious yet determined, self-deprecating, steady but slowly unraveling from the lack of social connection, the “final girl.” Coping with her fear of abandonment. Striving to cure her own emotional isolation.
Clark: Male, 20s-30s. Computer Scientist and Mechanical Engineer. Overflowing with bravado and charisma, daft and blunt yet instantly lovable, lives in the present. Aspiring to live a life of constant excitement. Slowly developing romantic feelings for Gilda.
Ray: Male, Late 40s-Early 60s. Captain. Sardonic, brimming with authority, strong but emotionally fragile. The veteran of the group and a relic of how the world was. Desperate to capture the glory of the past. This character is involved in depictions of self-harm and suicide.
Cole: Male, Late 20s-Late 30s. Scientist. Introverted and private, calculated but silently distressed. Motivated by facts, knowledge and truth. Determined to comprehend the future and uncover the unknown.
Mattie: Female, 20s. Computer Scientist and Mechanical Engineer. Warm and caring yet slightly mysterious, a caregiver, a rescuer, a safe place. Exists to fill the emotional voids of others.
Child/Young Mattie: Female, Aged 8-14.
Note: All characters speak with a standard British dialect or accent. This is not required during auditions, but actors are welcome and encouraged to use this dialect during auditions if they are comfortable.
Content Warning: This play contains depictions of suicide and self-harm, mental illness and graphic violence, including blood and gore.
