Review: MOTOWN THE MUSICAL at Fisher Theatre is the Perfect Show for Detroit & Motown Music Fans!

If there is one show that is perfect for Detroit, Motown the Musical would be it. Every aspect that there is to love about Motown Records and the music that came out of it is there in the show, plus the great adoration and respect that is gives to the Motor City. Whether you are a fan of Motown music, Detroit, or just love an entertaining and fun theatre experience, Motown the Musical is the show for you.

Motown the Musical is the story of Berry Gordy Jr. and the creation of Motown Records. It starts the audience with his first song writing experience to beginning Hitsville U.S.A. into what became his dream of Motown Records and ending with the 25th anniversary celebration of the label and all stars who careers were launched out of it such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson. The show includes over 40 numbers of Motown favorites including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "My Girl," "I Want You Back," "What's Going On," and "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)."

Chester Gregory plays the role of Berry Gordy and he is exceptional in it. The heart and soul that he puts into every moment makes the audience feel like they are living through Gordy's life for the first time. Jarran Muse plays the role of Marvin Gaye and his voice is gorgeous. His rendition of "What's Going On" is an absolute joy to experience. Allison Semmes plays the role of Diana Ross and she is the highlight of the show. She embodies Ross in every way possible, yet still seems to bring her own flare to the living legend. With every moment that Diana Ross grow up throughout the show, Semmes has the audience loving her and rooting for her to succeed that when she finally belts outs "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)" there is no other way but to describe it as being deeply in awe of her talent at that point of the show.

Motown the Musical is simply fun and a good night out. It reminds the audience of how one person's true American dream can turn into an amazing legacy that still brings joy today and that is exactly what Berry Gordy Jr. did with Motown Records and the careers it launched. This is a show for everyone: the lovers of Detroit, the lovers of theatre, and especially the lovers of Motown music!
