DETAILS about the composer and music

·      The Stainer Crucifixion is a meditation on the Passion of Jesus set through the lens of the prolific English composer Sir John Stainer, written in 1887. One of the movements, “God So Loved the World,” is often excerpted and has become ubiquitous in the American choral tradition.

·      As Passion settings are often set with orchestra, Stainer makes the organ function like an orchestra. The Cathedral organs, both designed according to an orchestrally driven concept of organ sound, will provide exciting accompaniment for the soloists and choir.

·      Nick Chalmers, tenor, and Andrew Kane, baritone, will be guest soloists joining the Cathedral choir ensemble. Nick and Andrew are noted interpreters of Stainer’s work and have performed it often. The Cathedral choir will perform a full rendition of the work’s choral parts.

·      Dr. Chris Ganza, Director of Sacred Music, Cathedral of Saint Paul, will perform two roles. Ganza will conduct Stainer’s oratorio in addition to accompanying on the organ, bringing the magnificent “King of Instruments” to life.

A freewill offering for the organ maintenance fund will be accepted.
