PRIME Productions proudly presents the world premiere of ABUELITA, a heartfelt and magical new play by Playwrights’ Center Core Member Nathan Yungerberg.
It’s July 10, 1993—day three of a ten-day heatwave in New York City. With temperatures reaching 102 degrees, it is hot. REALLY hot. Three Nuyorican (New York Puerto Rican) women are melting on their stoop in Spanish Harlem when Davia Johnson, a weary 72-year-old white grandmother, arrives with a jumbo suitcase and her teenage mixed-race grandson, Jesús. After the death of her daughter, Davia has come from Iowa so Jesús can connect with the culture of his unknown Nuyorican father. But New York is “hotter’n a blister bug in a pepper patch,” and as the heat rises, Davia’s world begins to transform—making way for an exciting new life filled with music, dancing, community, and awakening.
