Wes Drummond To Step Down As Executive Producing Artistic Director Of Duluth Playhouse
Leadership transition follows five-year tenure marked by growth and community engagement.
The Duluth Playhouse Board of Directors has announced that WES DRUMMOND will step down as Executive Producing Artistic Director after five years of leadership.
Drummond assumed the role during the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding the organization through a period of uncertainty while overseeing continued growth and operational stability. His tenure included work on the restoration and programming of the NorShor Theatre, as well as efforts to strengthen the Playhouse’s artistic and business operations.
“Duluth Playhouse was at a pivotal moment when WES DRUMMOND was hired to lead the organization,” said former Board President Patty McNulty, citing the importance of leadership during the NorShor Theatre’s redevelopment.
Under Drummond’s leadership, the Playhouse expanded its programming and audience reach, including productions that contributed to increased ticket sales and season memberships. Among them was Disney’s Frozen, which became the highest-grossing show in the company’s 112-year history.
“The past five years have been a period of extraordinary uncertainty for arts organizations,” said Board President Justin Peck. “We are grateful to Wes for his leadership in guiding the Playhouse through that uncertainty.”
Drummond also led initiatives focused on accessibility and inclusion, including the Theatre For All campaign, aimed at broadening access to performances and ensuring the NorShor Theatre is welcoming to a wide range of audiences.
“It has been an absolute privilege to lead Duluth Playhouse,” Drummond said. “Thanks to the dedication of our staff, board, artists, volunteers, and community, the Playhouse has emerged stronger and more vibrant.”
In addition to his work with the Playhouse, Drummond served on the Duluth Public Arts Commission and the Visit Duluth Board of Directors, supporting local arts and cultural initiatives.
The Duluth Playhouse Board of Directors has initiated a national search for new Artistic and Executive leadership.
