WICKED Will Hold Sensory-Friendly Performance in Minneapolis

Hennepin Arts will offer a sensory-friendly performance of WICKED on Sunday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the historic Orpheum Theatre (910 Hennepin Ave.) in downtown Minneapolis. This special performance is designed for individuals with sensory differences, cognitive or developmental disabilities and those who benefit from a more relaxed theatre environment, along with their families and caretakers. Presented in partnership with Fraser, the performance will be held in a supportive and judgment-free setting, creating greater access to one of Broadway's most beloved musicals. Fraser, a leader in autism and disability services, will provide guidance on planning and accessibility, including training for staff and volunteers to help ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests.

“We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the power of live theatre,” said Andrea Mokros, interim president and CEO of Hennepin Arts. “This work is central to our mission, opening our doors wider and bringing people together through a powerful shared experience. When we expand access, we strengthen our entire community and help ensure the arts continue to inspire and connect people across Minnesota.”

To create a comfortable experience, several adjustments will be made to the performance and theatre environment, including:

  • Lower sound levels, especially for startling or intense moments
  • House lights remaining on at a low level throughout the performance
  • Flexible audience expectations, with movement and sound permitted
  • Designated sensory break areas within the theatre
  • Trained volunteers and professionals available throughout the performance
  • Sensory supports such as fidgets, earplugs and noise-canceling earmuffs available in the lobby
  • Online and printed guidance materials to help prepare for the show experience

Audience members are welcome to bring their own sensory supports, including handheld tools, seat cushions, comfort objects and other items that enhance their experience.

This performance is open to the public, but customary theatre etiquette will be relaxed to create a more inclusive and accessible environment. Guests are encouraged to engage with the performance in ways that are most comfortable for them.
